H. A. BURR. Cotton-Bale Tie.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY A. BURR, OF WILMINGTON, NORTH CAROLINA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALE TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,099, dated April 8, 1879; application filed January 9, 1879.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY A. BURR, of Wilmington, in the county of New Hanover and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Cotton-Bale Tie, of which the following is a specification.
Figure 1 is a plan of the tie. Fig. 2 is a plan of the tie loop or buckle. Fig. 3 is a view of the tie-wedge.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish a simple and inexpensive bale-tie that may be used with any band-puller.
In the process of compressing, a bale is, after being reduced in size, rebanded with the original bands, and, a buckle or loop like the one herein shown being used, the buckle being fastened on one end of the band, the other end of the band is drawn up and through the slot in the buckle.
It is obvious that, without some restraining medium, the hand must again draw back and in order to prevent this I place the wedge A between the bight of the band B in the buckle C, so that the expansion of the bale will draw in the wedge, and thus create sufficient frictional resistance to hold the bands in place.
I am aware that tie loops or buckles of this shape or its equivalent have been before used, and consequently I make no claim to it; but I am not aware that this simple plan of securing the tie by a wedge has ever been in use. I make use of it as well in baling as in compressing, and in the latter instance I take the clippings from the ties and bend them into the wedge-shaped pieces used, thus securing a considerable economic advantage.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat- Ent The combination, in a bale-tie, of the band B, buckle U, and wedge A, substantially as shown and described.
HENRY A. BURR.
