SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,022, dated March 10, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, DAVID WILLIA Grsrr, a citizen of the United States. residing at San J os, Santa Clara county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Bale-Tie Fasteners; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

My invention relates to the class of balingties and to the fastenings thereof.

It consists in the novel construction herein-. after fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

The object of my invent-ion is to provide a especially applicable to ties made of wire, and which will permit the repeated use of the tie by its adaptability to be readily released without injuring the tie.

Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tie, showing the loop at each end, said loops being separated. Fig. 2 is a view of the locking-pin. Fig. 3 is aview showing the engagement of the pin with the loops thereby fastening the tie.

The tie A may be made of any suitable material, having a loop or eye a at each end. I have here shown it as made of wire and the loops formed by bending back and twisting the ends. The looking-pin B is preferably a piece of metal of any required strength. It has a crook b at its middle and its ends I) are bent downwardly. Now, to use the tie, one of the loops at is passed sufficiently through the other-to admit the lockingpin, which passes through the inserted loop and above and across the other loop. The inserted loop bears in the crook Z) of the pin,'while the ends I) of said pin bend downwardly toward the bale and are not, therefore, liable to be caught by anything which might tend to displace it. The object of the crook in the pin is to better hold it in place, to which result the bent ends also conduce, so that while said pin can readily be removed when desired it will not be loosened or displaced accidentally, but will hold'the tie securely. This construction, on account of the ease with which the fastening can be intentionallyreleased, is well adapted for use with those ies which it will be of advantage to save and use again, and on this account is itespecially of value with wire ties.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The bale-tie fastening consisting of the tie having a loop or eye at each end, one of said loops being adapted to pass into the other, and the locking-pin havingacrook at its middle, said pin passing across one of said loops or eyes and through the other, and its crook engaging said last-named loop or eye, substantially as herein described.

2. The bale-tie fastening consisting of the tie having a loop or eye at each end and the locking-pin having a crook at its middle and downwardly-bentends, said pin passingacross one of said loops or eyes and through the other, and its crook engaging said last-named loop or eye, substantially as herein described.
