SAMUEL J. SIMMONS, O'F BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM O. SIMMONS, OF SAME PLACE.
SHOESTRING- FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 514,284, dated February 6, 1894. Application filed November 16, 1893. Serial No. 491,108- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. SIMMONS, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoestring-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in shoe string fasteners,-the object of the invention being to produce a simple and efficient device whereby to fasten the ends of a shoe string together.
A further object is to producea shoe string fastener which shall be so constructed that the ends of the string can be effectually united or fastened and so that it can be quickly and easily operated to release the string by merely pulling upon one of the ends thereof.
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a view showing the application of my invention. Fig. 2 is adetail view. Fig. 3 isa view of the device adapted to be secured to a lad ys shoe having eyelets.
A represents the body portion of my improved fastener and is provided at one end with a loop or eye 0. adapted to engage the upper right hook, on a shoe. The other end of the body portion A is made with a lip 19 projecting at right angles from said body portion and at a point in rear of said lip, two parallel ears 0, c, are made. Between the ears 0, a leverB is pivoted, said lever having a clamping jaw d, between which and the body portion A, the string 0 is clamped. The lever B is also made with a jaw e at right angles to the jaw d, and between this jaw e and the. lip b, the other end of the string is clamped. One end of the shoe string 0 is passed through the end of the body portion and between the ears 0, c, in position to be clamped bythe jawd of the lever B. The device is, then hooked on the upper right handbook of the shoe. The lever B will then be turned on its pivots sufticiently to partially clamp the string and the other end of the string, from the second hook on the left hand side of the shoe, will then be inserted in the space between the ears 0 and the lip 19, when the lever will be pressed com pletely down, thus causing the last-mentioned end of the string to be clamped between the jaw e and the lip 17, thus tightly securing the ends of the string together. Neither end of the string will be passed around the hook on the shoe to which the device is attached. When it is desired to loosen the string to remove the shoe, the lever B will be raised sufficiently to release the end of the string held by the jaw e and lip 19, by simply pulling upon the other end of the string. The leverB will then again be pressed down to retain the device on the string; Where it will remain until it is again desired to fasten the ends of the string.
When the device is to be used on ladies shoes having eyelets instead of hooks for the lacing string, the loop awill be omitted and one end of the body portion of the device will be out to produce tangsf, which will be passed through the upper right hand eyelet of the shoe and bent against the inner face of the shoe in a manner similar to a paper fastener.
My improvements are simple in construction, cheap to manufacture and effectual in the performance of their functions.
. Having fully described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As an article of manufacture, a shoe string fastener consisting essentially of a main or body portion adapted to be attachedto one flap of ashoe, said main or body portion provided with a lip, a lever hinged to the main or body portion and provided with two jaws, one of which cooperates with the main or body portion of the fastener to receive and hold an end of the string between itself and the main or body portion of the fastener and the other with the lip to clamp the other end of the string between them, substantially as set forth.
2. As an article of manufacture, a shoe string fastener consisting of a main or body portion, said main or body portion having a lip and the latter provided with a recess in one edge main or body portion and the lip whereby to clamp the opposite ends of the shoe string, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this 15 specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SAMUEL J. SIMMONS.
