Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 1 5, 1913 Application filed June 17, 1912 Serial No. 704,150.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it .known that 1', Joan T. Dnnspnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salem, in the county of Roanoke and State of Virginia, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Lace-Fastening Devices for Shoes, Gloves, and the Like, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings. v My invention relates to new and useful improvements in fastenings for shoes, gloves and the like and more particularly to a fastening device for the lace therefor and my object is to provide s. device which will securely and positively retain a lace in its effective position after the latter has been drawn to bring the ends of the article together. e
A further object of the invention resides in providing a device which'is particularly adapted for use in connection with a shoe or 'love wherein a single lace is required to raw the same to its closed position and another object is to provide a device which may be quickly and readily operated.
A still further object resides in providing a device which is extremely simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efiioient and useful in operation.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangementof parts as will. be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in' the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shoe showing my device applied to use thereon. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section through the lace fastening device on the shoe. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the lace securing device removed.
In describing my invention, I shall refer to the drawing in which similar reference thereto, the U-shaped eyelets or keepers 2,
what is known as the vamp thereof is an additional keeper or eyelet 3. similar to the keepers 2, which isarrang'ed to project between the referredto-edges ofthe upper, and engaged with this latter keeper or eyelet 3 is one end of a lacing cord 4, said cord being also. disposed through the staggered keepers or eyelets 2. My invention primarily contemplates th provision of a means for securing the lacing cord after the same has drawn the upper to its closed position, and to this end, I provide a sleeve-like body portion 5 which is provided with 'ashank 6 riveted or other- .wise secured to the top portion oft-he upper.
The bore 7 of this body portion 5 is threaded and extends for a portion of the length of saidjbody to communicate with a trans verse channel 8, said channel being adapted to receive therethrough theend of the lacing cord l. A buttonhead or the like 9. which has the peripheral edge thereof milled for obvious purposes, is provided with a threaded shank 10 which is adapted to be engaged with the threaded bore 7 of the body 5 and it will be appreciated that by turning this button head 9 in one direction, the free end of said shank .10 maycommunicate with the lacing cord 4 and secure the same against further movement in the body.
In practice, it will be seen that after the lacing cord has been once positioned iii-the shoe, as shown in Fig. 1, it will not be necessary to remove said cord from the various devices on the shoe in applying the shoe to the foot or removing the same therefrom. After the lacing cord has been drawn to close the upper tightly about the foot, it is only necessary to turn the button head 9 to secure said cord against movement and the free end of said cord may be allowed to hang below the fastening device or \entered in the upper end of the shoe. When it is desired to remove the shoe from the foot, it is only necessary to turn the button head 9 in the opposite direction and the tension. of-
head 9 with the sh anl: 10 forming a securing means for the lacing cord'in the device, the
outer end of the body portion 5 is flared at,
its peripheral edge as shown at 11, while a the same to said portion 11 of the body,
vent the loss of this securing this connection it ous changes in form, proportlon and in the body member, and means cooperating with said body member and the which is loosely mounted on head of said adjusting screw to prevent the the body portionfi is provided with arms 13 which have theinouter ends engaged with the under face of t e button head 9.1 Thus as the button head 9 is turned, the ring memher 12 with the arms 13 thereon will'likewise be turned, and the outward "movement of said button head will be limited by the-contact of said ring member 12 with the flared whichwill obviously prevent the total disengagement of the shank 10 with the body 5 and thereby pres means. particularly described my device as being used in connectionlwith a shoe, it will be readily understood thatit may also be equally well adapted for use in connection with a glove or the like and in might be stated that varibody member. a v
2. A lace fastening device comprising a .sleeve like" body member provided with a transverse channel adjacent one end thereof, an adjusting screw extending longitudinally through said body member and adaptedto enter the transverse channel thereof, a ring encircling said body member, arms connecting said'ring with the head of said adjusting screw,- and means formed on said body member to prevent the removal of said ring therefrom, j
3. The combination with h an article of manufacture, and a lacing cord therefor; of a sleeve-like body member applied to said While I have therethrongh, an adjusting screw applied to said body and adapted for engagement with minor details of construction may be resort;
said lacing vcord to secure the latter to said ed to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the innof, said adjusting screw and adapted for co- Having th des r ed t s in ention, operation with portions of said body to prewhat I claim is 2- i v v vent the total disengagement of the screw 1. The combination with an article of therefrom, manufacture and a lacing cord therefor; of In t timony a sleeve-like body member applied to said signature in the article and adapted to receive said lacing cord therethrough, an adjusting screw applied to said body member and adapted for engagement with said lacing cord to secure whereof Ihereunto 'aifix my presence of two witnesses.
