Description
n. c. STGVER. DEVICES FOR SECURING METALLIC FENCE-RAILS TO POSTS.
No. 133,601. Patented Oct.24,1 876.
rlllzll' IIII IIIIIII c. If! II gmmmftmg C SRw NI'IED STATES DANIEL G. STOVER, OF FREEPORT, ILL., ASSIGNOR TO JACOB BRINKERHO "PATENT OFFICE;
OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
. IMPROVEMENT IN DEVICES FOR SECURING METALLIC FENCE-RAILS T0 POSTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. IS3,601, dated October 24, 1876; application filed August 24, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL O. STOVER, of Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Hooks; and I-do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make "and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a device for fastenin g the bars or strips of a metallic fence to the post, and consists in a clasp or hook, having a shank to be driven into the post, and the clasp or hook adapted to receive the strips or bars.
111 the annexed drawing, Figure l represents a perspective view of a fence-post and a section of bars or strips, showing the hook in position as used, and Fig. 2 is a perspective of the hook.
In the annexed drawing, A represents an ordinary fence-post. B are the strips or bars forming the panels, and G the hook or clasp.
No claim is made in this application to any peculiar form of post, or strips or bars forming the panels; but the invention relates especially to the device for fastening the strips or bars to the post.
The clasp or hook G, as represented, is formed with a shank, a, for entering the post, having a projection, c, on its outer end, and provided on its .under side with a hook or clasp, d e. The outer projection 0 serves the double office of a head, by which the hook is driven into the post, while the under portion assists in holding the strips or bars in position, as will be hereinafter described.
This hook or clasp is formed of metal of any character that will yield or bend, so that when the strips or bars are placed within the hook or clasp the outer portion 2 can be bent up against the strips or bars, holding the same firmly in place against the inner part b, while the under part of the projection 0 prevents the bars or strips from being displaced While the same are held in the clasps d e.
If desired to be removed at any time the outer portion of the clasp can be bent outward, and the bars or strips will be released.
If desired, the shank a may be provided with flanges or ribs 1), to assist in holding the shank more firmly in the post. 4
In use, the hooks may be secured to the post either before or after the panels are put up. The strips or bars are placed within the clasp d e, and the same bent as described, which secures the strips or bars firmly in position. By using a hook or clasp to secure the bars or strips, the bars or strips are held away from the post, which is very desirable, as the metal forming the panels will rust or corrode it held against the post, as moisture collects and is held between the metal and post.
Another advantage gained by the use of a clasp is, that the panels can be put up and taken down without removing the clasp from the post.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A clasp or hook adapted to be secured to a post, and provided with projection c and the parts d e of yielding material for the purpose of securing metallic fence-rails to posts,
for the purpose set forth.
2. The hook 0, having shank a b, projection 0, and the parts at e, for the purpose of securin g the metallic fence-rails to the posts, for the purpose set forth. I,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL G. STOVER. Witnesses:
R. B. SMITH, J. BRINKE RHOFF.
