WIRE-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jain-9,191 2.
Application filed August 27, 1908. Serial No. 450,541.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID MoNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Belview, in the county of Redwood and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wire fasteners and refers particularly to a device for supporting strands of wire as for instance in the construction of a fence.
An object of this invention is to construct a fastener of this description which may be readily secured to a fence post and through which barbed wire may be passed and may be drawn taut without the necessity of loosening or releasing the fastener.
The invention has for another object the provision of a device of this character which is so constructed as to present no edges in such position as to catch the barbs of a wire when drawn therethrough or which will cause undue frictional contact between the wire and the fastener.
Another object is to provide such a fastener having a central opening of a maximum size when in operative position, and which may be manufactured at a minimum cost.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a post having the device applied thereto, Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the post showing the device applied thereto, Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the fastener.
Referring to the drawings, 10 designates a fence post of any suitable structure which supports a strand of wire 11 through the medium of the fastener 12 which forms subject matter of this invention. The fastener 12 comprises a transversely curved metallic strip of sheet metal provided with a pair of similarly spaced openings 15 and 16 at each end and curved circularly toward its convex side so as to have the opposite ends 13 and 14L overlapped with the apertures 15 and 16 in the opposite extremities of the strip registered. The apertures 15 and 16 are thus adapted to admit of the passage outwardly therethrough of nails or screws 17 which serve to support the fastener 12 upon the post 10. The fastener 12 is ordinarily to be vertically disposed upon the front of the post 10 and is so formed as to present an inner convexed surface over which the wire 11 is drawn. The object in having the convexed inner surface is for the purpose of deflecting the barbs 18 and preventing them from catching against the fastener12 while the wire 11 is being drawn taut through the fastener.
It is preferable to form the fastener 12 of a hard substance which will not yield as iron or the like for it is not necessary to remove the fastener from the post or to even loosen the same when it is desired to remove the wire 11 therefrom. The respective fastenings being driven in inclined position from respective sides of the device, they are especially adapted to resist lateral bending of the device when in use, as when the-device tends to be bent in one direction lateral strain is communicated tothe fastening device driven upon the opposite side, instead of a drawing strain as would be the case if the fastening were driven in parallel with the major plane of the support.
It will be seen that the manufacture of this device is extremely simple and its use does not involve any special fastening members or tools, as ordinary wire nails or screws may be used.
VVha-t is claimed is In an article of the class described the combination with a fence post, of a wire support comprising a transversely curved strip of sheet material bent to form an annulus with its concave side disposed outwardly, each end of the strip being provided with a pair of similarly spaced transversely disposed openings, the ends of the strip being disposed in overlapped relation with the openings in registry, and fastening members engaged through the respective registered openings from the inner face of the annulus, said openings being spaced adjacent the edges of the strip to allow the fastening members to be driven at an inclination with respect to the plane of the support, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID MONSON.
