S.DENT.
BARBED WIRE FENCE.
No. 578,447,. Patented Mar. 9, 1897.
U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.SAMUEL DENT, OF JANSVILLE, IDAHO.
BARBED-WIRE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 578,447, dated March 9, 1897.
Application filed April 11, 1896.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL DENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at J ansville, in the county of Latah and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbed-Wire Fences; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in barbed-wire fences, and has for its objects, among others, to provide a simple and cheap barbed strip that will be as serviceable for the purpose for which it is intended as prior forms and still not be liable to maim or cut the animals should they run against it. I form the same of strips of metal of any desired width and stamp the barbs therefrom and extend them all from one or from both sides of the strip, as may be preferred. It is capable of manufacture at small cost, is durable, and not liable to injure the hands of the person putting up the fence.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the fencestrip constructed in accordance with my invent-ion. Fig. 2 is a' similar view showing two ends spliced. Fig.3is across-section through Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an edge view.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a strip of metal of any required width and length, and from this strip I stamp by suitable machinery the prongs or barbs a, which are substantially triangular in form and may be of any desired length, preferably of such a length as to be confined with the width of the strip when they are turned outwardly. The line of division a between each two barbs is preferably at an inclination to the edges of the strip, so that Serial No. 587,135. (No model.)
when the barbs are turned, as indicated, they will pass each other and their adjacent edges lie in substantially the same plane. The extreme ends of the barbs may be turned in, as indicated, so they will not be sharp enough to out v the hands in putting up thefence or anything that comes in contact therewith. The prongs may be of such a length as to extend a little upon each side of the strip, if desired.
In Figs. 2 and 3 I have indicated how the adjacent ends of two strips may be readily spliced simply by overlapping the ends and placing the cross -bar a of the two strips one upon the other and then taking the two prongs of the one piece and passing them through the openings in the other piece and bending them over the said cross-bars. This makes a strong and readily-made splice and holds the two bands together.
Modifications in detail as to the length and shape of the barbs may be made without de-, parting from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
. What I claim as new is- 1. A barbed fencing-strip having the barbs stamped therefrom in pairs, with a line of separation between the members of each pair of barbs at an angle to the edges of the strip, substantially as described.
2. A fencing-strip of-cheap metal having prongs stamped therefrom with their ends turned under to prevent injury to anything coming in contact therewith, substantially as described.
3. A fencing-strip of cheap metal having prongs stamped therefrom in pairs, with a line of separation between the members of each pair at an angle to the edges of the strip and the ends of said prongsturned'under to prevent injury to anything coming in contact therewith, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof Ihave signed this specification in the presence of two subscribv ing witnesses.
SAMUEL DENT.
