FENCE.
Patented-A`11g. 24, 1886.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM E. BUNCH, OF NEBO, ARKANSAS.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 347 865, dated August 24, 1886.
Application led February 25, 1885 Serial No. 157.051. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. BUNCH, of Nebo, inthe county of Benton and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and toletters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of "this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in portable fences; and the features of novelty consist in the details of construction and general arrangement of parts, all as'will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the Claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improvements, and Fig. 2 a detail sectional view.
Similar letters ot reference indicate like parts in both figures.
In carrying out my invention the posts A are Iirst planted at regular and suitable distanees apart. The bottom rails, B, having their lower corners eut, respectively, at an acute angle and at an obtuse angle, are then removably secured to said posts near the ground by means of an overlapping piece of wire, a, the upper and lower curved ends of which are secured to the post by means of small staples,as shown in Fig. 2. The upper or top rails, O, having their ends cut at angles similar to those ofthe bottom rails, B, are then adj usted upon the tops of the posts, and held in position thereon by means of the overlapping straps or lengths of wire c, the ends ot' which are secured to the post A, one on each side, by small staples, as shown in Fig. 2. The ends of two rails when joined together lap lupon the sides of the post A, so as to insure a rm bearing, as also to facilitate the ready removal or replacement of said rails, Between the posts A, and adapted to be secured to the top and bottom rails, B and O, are arranged a series of rails, D, removable, if desired, located at suitable distances apart, land attached at their ends to upright strips or pieces E. The frames or sections thus formed are secured to the top rail by means ot' the lengths of wire d, having looped ends, as shown, by which they are attached at their upper ends with small staples to the top rails, C, and at their lower ends to the tops of the said strips or side pieces, E, as shown. Similar lengths of wire, e, are attached to the lower rail, B, and to t-he lower ends of the strips E, to hold the several parts securely together.
By means of my improvements the posts and rails of which the fence is to be composed may be packed in an ordinary farm-wagon,be transported to any desired iield or fields, and be readily placed together to form a most substantial and durable fence Without the necessity of using nails or the employment of tools of any kind, save those for properly planting the supporting-posts A. Any number of sections offence may thus be readily put up or taken down in the quickest and best possible manner. l
I am aware of the Patents No. 123,488, February 6, 1872, and No. 277,357, May 8, 1883, Fences, and I do not therefore claim the same, broadly, nor the arrangement of the various parts thereof; but
What I claim is- In a portable fence, the posts A A, in combination with the rails B C, having reversed terminal angles to form joints with similarlyformed contiguous ends of adjacent rails, which are connected to them by bent wires a a c c, the frame consisting of the strips E and rails D, and wires d d e e, which serve to suspend and maintain said frame between the outer rails and posts, for the purpose and in the manner set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I atx my signature in presence of two witnessess.
W. E. BUNCH.
