Be it known that I, JAMES C. VAN GLEAVE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Malvern, in the county of Hot Spring and State of Aska-nsas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fences, of which the following is a speciiication.

My invention relates to improvements in portable fences; and it consists in a certain novel construction, fully described hereinafter, and specifically pointed out in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a section of the fence. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section through one ofthe posts. Fig. 3 is a detail section through the sill.

Referring to the dra-wings, A designates a horizontal transverse sill, at the center of which, on the upper side, is formed a notch, B, the bottom ot' which notch is ridged to form a saddle, B.

C designates the post, formed of two vertical parallel planks, D D, provided at the upper ends, on the outer sides,with the notches d d. Near the outer ends of the sill are formed the inclined grooves or notches a e, and in the said notches are secured the lower ends of the clamping or brace bars E, which are adapted to be received near the upper ends in the notches d in the upper ends of the uprights D.

F designates the horizontal rails ofthe fence, and to secure the same in place nail the ends thereof to one of the uprights D, place the other upright in position on the other side of upper ends of the uprights to beplaced therebetween, and consequently when the said clamping-bars are released they spring tightly into the notches d and hold the post firmlyin position.

The ends of the rails are nailed or otherwise secured to the uprights D; but the same railis never secured at opposite ends to two uprights surface of the ground, and by simply spread- 63 ing the upper ends of the clamping-bars the fence may be taken apart.

Having described my invention, I claim- Asanimprovernentinfences,thecombination of the base or sill having the inclined grooves a a in their opposite sides, near their opposite ends, and the central notch, B, in its upper side, the base ofsaid notch B having the longitudinal ridge B, the braces having their lower ends secured in the grooves a a, the vertical parallel planks D D, secured in the notches B and having their .lower ends notched to lit over the ridge B', and provided with the notches d in their upper outer edges to receive the upper portion ofthe braces, and the rails secured between the planks D D, substantially as specified.
