ALMON T. MORRIS, OF BUOYRUS, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 211,768, dated January 28, 1879 application filed December 12, 1878.
To all whom it lmay concern:
Be it known that I, ALMoN T. MoRRis, of Bucyrus, in the county of Crawford and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements in Portable Fences; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference bein had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l shows two panels of my fence set up on a level. Fig. 2 shows two panels set up on undulating` ground. Fig. 3 shows a panel of my fence and its change of form, indicated in dotted lines.
The object of my invention is to provide a portable wooden fence which can be made to adapt itself to the inequalities and irregularities of the ground; and it consists in a series of parallel bars forming each panel pivoted to uprights or posts, so that their angles to the posts may be changed at will, and a pair of them having their ends projecting, so that they may interlock and form a worm-fence, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In order that those skilled in the art may make and use iny invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the said drawings, a b c d are four parallel planks or stringers, provided with vertical posts or supports ej'g, and to which they are pivoted by wrought-iron nails or other devices t' i. Supports or posts e and g are double, one piece lying on each side of the stringers. Alternating at each end of the panel thus formed each alternate stringer has an end, a c bd, projecting beyond' the posts e g, w-hich interlock against posts e g, and sustain the fence against transverse strain, as shown in Figs. l and 2. The panels are held together against longitudinal separat-ion by wire or other convenient clasps.
When the fence is to be laid or set up on irregular ground, the pivoted joints allow the stringers to be laid at any required angle, while the posts remain vertical. (See Fig. 2.) After the panels have been arranged to the contour of the ground and set up, a single nail driven through a Stringer and post where they cross each other will retain the panel in the required form.
When the panel is to be :moved for use elsewhere, the single nail can be withdrawn and the panel readjusted to any new contour of ground.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Iletters Patent, is-
A portable fence-panel consisting of the stringers a b ed and posts e f g, secured together by pivots 'i i, and provided with projecting ends a.lV b c' d', substantially as and for the purpose described.
