UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISAAC GOLVIN, OF HILLSBOROUGH, OHIO.
FENCE.
SPEOIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 252,191, dated January 10, 1882. Application filed October 10, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ISAAC OOLVIN, of Hillsborough, in the county of Highland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a crosssection of my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view with one of the panels removed, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section.
This invention has relation to portable fences; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement ofthe posts, panels, bolts, stakes, riders, and hooks, as will be hereinafter fully out in the claim.
Referring by letters to the accompanying drawings, A designate the posts, and B the panels, which are composed of rails or planks projecting slightly at each end from said uprights, as shown. Alternate panels D are bolted to theposts A, the bolts a being passed through the uprights H so as to leave rabbets or shoulders b at the opposite edges of alternate posts, as shown. a The intersecting panels B. are slipped into the grooves or channels formed by, the shoulders b and the projecting ends of the panels D, and may be removed by raising them out of the channels. The fence-panels are supported in place by stakes H and riders I, 5 the stakes being clam ped by hooks J, as shown, to prevent accidental misplacemeut of the stakes and riders.
When necessary to transport the fence the stakes and riders are removed, the intersecting panels lifted from the place, and the bolts removed to release the alternate panels secured thereby to the posts, and finally the posts withdrawn from the ground and the whole transported and reset.
This construction affords a cheap, durable, and simple portable fence, in which any one of the intersecting panels may be lifted to form a gap in the fence.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a portable fence, the panels D, consisting of the uprights H, rails G, and posts A, secured together by bolts, the said posts and rails projecting beyond the uprights, forming rabbets b, in combination with the panels B, consistingot' uprights H and rails G, project ing beyond said uprights, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two'witnesses.
ISAAC (JOLVIN.
