Description

BIF. WILSON. PORTABLE-FENCE.
No.17'5,806. Patented Apri14,1876.

UNITED S'I'ATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. WILSON, 0F GOSPORT, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,806, dated April 4, 1876; application filed January 22, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, B. F. WILSON, of Gosport, in the county of Marion, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fences; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangementof a fence, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in Which-- Figure I is a perspective View of my fence. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side view of one of the fence-posts.
The panels of my fence are each composed of horizontal boards A, fastened to a vertical cleat, B, near each end on one side, and a similar cleat in the center on the opposite side, the horizontal boards projecting sufficiently to overlap the boards of the adjoining panels. The fence-post is composed of two side bars, 0 0, connected a suitable distance above their lower ends by a horizontal brace, D, pivoted to the side bars by means of wooden pins a a. The upper ends otthe side bars 0 O are formed with V-shaped notches b b, substantially as shown in Fig. 2. In the center of the brace D is a notch, 11, .in the upper edge, to receive the overlapping ends of the lower boards of two adjoining panels. The overlapping ends of the top boards of the adjoining panels rest in the notches b b at the upper ends of the side bars 0 (J, which form clamps to hold the panels. The heavier the panels are the tighter these clamps will hold the panels, as the weight of the panels forces the upper ends of the side bars inward. A pin, '6, is then passed through the projecting prong h of each side bar to lock the parts together.
I This fence may be made of ordinary fencinglumber, and is easily put up and taken down, as required.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The side bars 0 0, formed at their upper ends with notches b and projecting prongs h, with locking pins i, in combination with the notched brace D, pivoted to the side bars, so as to be elevated above the ground, and the overlapping fence-panels, allconstructed substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of December, 1875.
B. F. WILSON. Witnesses:
G. B. STEVENSON, S. P. LAOKEY.
