UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
GEORGE W. DURANT, AND JAMES B. DURANT, OF BRYAN, TEXAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-POST SOCKETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,687, dated September 9, 1873 application filed J une 13, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, GEORGE W. DURANT and JAMES B. DURANT, of Bryan, in the county of Brazos and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Fence; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are perspective views of two modifications, showing the features of improvement as applied, respectively, to a rail or paling fence. Fig. 3.is a detail view of the socket-plate as constructed by me.
The invention relates to means whereby the post of a fence may be held in a secure and convenient manner, as hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing, A represents a base-plate having the slot at near the middle and the perforations a near the edge of each side. B is a socket, cast with the base-plate A of a rectangular form, and attached to the plate so as to leave a rest on each side of slot a for each part of the post. These constitute the post-support. O is the post itself, consisting of two pieces, a c, that are held together at the bottom by socket B, and at the top by a cap,D,or-coiled wire D, while they are spaced by blocks E that also support the rails F. Gr is a pointed stake driven through the slot a to hold the post-support immovably. H is a series of anchors or braces, one attached to each side of base-plate A by a wire, or other connection, h. The metallic plate, socket, and wires are all, preferably, galvanized, to prevent oxidation.
The application is as follows: The plate A is covered with earth, which may be rammed around and upnearly even with the top of socket B, while a sharpened stake, G, is driven into the ground through the slot to. It the anchors are used, they are extended out on each side and covered to the same or a greater depth opposite to each edge of plate A, which is thereby braced on every side.
If a paling fence is preferred, the blocks E are elongated, so as to project from between the posts and two rails, F F, made to embrace them, being held thereto by wires D or they may be made to rest between the parts co,
which are for thatpurpose spaced to a greater distance by three blocks, E, on which the rails are supported. The post pieces 00, stake G, blocks E, rails F, and palings G, are all made from pieces of timber of the same transverse section, so that they can be conveniently shipped in pieces of the same width and thickness, and afterward merelytrimmed or cutfor the different parts of the fence. By this means the fence-111m ber can be put up very compactly and transported very easily and cheaply.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The fence-post socket-plate A, slotted at a, and having a socket,B,eXtending at the bottom beyond each side of slot, thus forming the shelves b I), as and for the purpose described.
