Description

`- tluiml -Statn' @anni IMPRO'VEMENT IN' FENCES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of tlm lam To all whom it ma/y concern:
Beit known that I, THOMAS STANFORD, of Noblesville, in the county of Hamilton, and in the State of Indiana, have invented a certain new and useful Innproveinent in Fences; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of vreference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a portable plank fence, with metal fastenings to fasten the panels together.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I
will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a;
part of this specication, and in Which- Figure l is a perspective of the fence;
Figure 2 is a bottom view of the upper fastening; and
Figure 3, a perspective of the lower fastening.
A A represent the planks which form the panels of the fence.
B B are the posts, which are securedto the boards A A at the ends thereof, and placed alternately on the front and rear side.
bevelled, and the outer edges come ush with the edges of the posts B B.
The panels of the fence being thus constructed, they are placed together in a zigzag form, and fastened by The ends of the boards A A are' means of a metal cap, O, which fits on top of the two adjoining posts.
The cap, C, is of the peculiar construction shown in iig. 2, having two recesses, or boxes, a a, in which the upper ends of the posts B B are inserted.
The lower ends of the posts B B are fastened by a metal clamp, D, (which is slipped on the posts,) having aV-shaped projection, b, which fits in the angle between the posts; andthe corners of the fence being thus fastened, the fence will stand perfectly secure, and, at the same time, be easily taken apart, removed, and put up again.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination ofthe fence-panels A Awith the cap, C, and clamp D, substantially 'as'speciied 2. The metal cap, G, constructed as described, for the purpose ofsecuring the upper ends of the fenceposts B B together, substantially as herein set forth.
3. The metal clamp D, constructed as described, for
the purpose of l fastening the lower ends of the fenceposts B B together, substantially as herein set forth. In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 30th day of January,'1869.
