Description

@wat temine.
DANIEL ,1. DE GROAT, OF NEWBURG, NEW YORK.
Letters .Patent No. 91,310, dated June 15, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN IRON FENCE.
' The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL I. DE GROAT, of New burg, in the county of Orange, and State of New York, 'have invented a new and useful Improvement in Iron Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others Skilled in the artto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this speciiication, in Which- Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of apanel of an iron fence. r
Figure 2 represents a portion of the same enlarged.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional View of the same, taken through the line :1J-x, fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object 'to furnish an improved device for attaehing'the parts or sections of the panels of iron fences together, which shall be sirnple in construction, easily applied, and will hold the parts securely in place; and
It consists in securing the parts to each other by bolts, having a head upon one end and a cross-head upon the other, ,as hereinafter more fully described.
A represents sections of appanel of au iron fence, the ends of the arms of which, that come in contact with each other, are made half the thickness f the other parts, so thatF the overlapped ends may be of the same thickness as the other parts.
Through the overlapped ends of the sections A are formed slots, of sufcient size to receive the cross-head of the locking-bolts B.
Upon one end of the bolts B is formed a head, of such a form that it may be grasped with' a wrench, and of such a size as to wholly cover the slots or holes through which the bolts are passed.
Upon the other or forward ends of the bolts B are formed cross-heads, as showndn iig. 2.
In putting the sections together, the cross-heads are passed through the overlapped ends of the sections, and the bolts are then turned, bringing the cross-head at right angles to the slot. The surface of the sections against which the cross-heads bear should be slightly inclined from the slots, so that the said bolts may operate with a screw-motion to draw the overlapped parts more closely together, so that they will be held securely and cannot he loosened without using a wrench.
If desired, the part through which the cross-head' end of the boltgB projects may be covered with a cap, formed upon the said part, so as to cover the said crosshead and give an ornamental appearance to the fence.
In this case the said caps a may have a hole in their centres, to receive and support the forward ends of said bolts, while being operated upon by the wrench.
The side of the overlapping parts of the panel, against which the heads of the holt rests, may be surrounded with a low beading, to give an ornamental appearance to the fence.
The sections of the panels nearest to the posts may be connected with said posts, in the same manner as the said sections are connected to each other, as hereinbefore described.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with iron-fence sections, constructed with slotted openings at their intersections, of the bolt B, provided with a head upon one end and a cross-head upon the other, as set forth.
DANIEL I. DE GROAT.
