P. M. MISHLER.
PORTABLE FENCE.
No. 406,053. Patented July 2, 1889.
E WITNESSES M 274% a/ a nmmumo n h UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHARES M. MISHLER, OF HAGERSTOW'N, MARYLAND.
PORTABLE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,053, dated July 2, 1889.
Application filed February 7, 1889. Serial No. 298,973. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, PHARES M. MISHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ilagerstown, in the county of \Vashington and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Port-able Fences; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in portable fences; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of the fence in a straight line, having the panels broken away. Fig. 2 is also a perspective view showing the panels arranged at right angles, representing a fence-corner. Fig. 3 is .a top view of a portion of only one of the panels.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A A designate two panels of the fence, at the ends of which are secured the vertical posts or uprights a a, the former of which is provided near its upper end with a fastening plate or block b, which, when the two uprights are brought together, clasps the adjoining upright and serves to hold securely the two posts to one another at or near their upper ends, while the block 9 on the base e firmly secures the lower ends of the two panels together. Attached to this base 6 is a bracing-post 13, consisting of a single rod,the vertical portion d being hinged at fto the panel, which connection permits the post B to swing laterally and around against the panel, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The vertical portion (1 of the post I is braced by an inclined brace-bar c, which is a part thereof,
and it not only serves to brace the post (I, but also serves as a handle for turning the same, with its sill or base, upon its hinges to lie flat with the panels h of the fence.
It will thus be seen that I construct a knockdown fence, and by swinging the brace-posts parallel with the panels the same lie snugly therewith, and said panels can be packed closely for shipping or storing, and the panels can be connected easily and quickly and the same fastening answer for the fencecorner, and it is durable, and cheap to coin struct.
It will be observed, first that I have a double locking joint, part of which is formed by the upright a and part by engaging metal portion I), and that, in combination with this look, I employ certain staples or eyes f, through which passes the vertical pintle portion (1 of an angular brace B, which is stepped at f into the sill c. It will thus be seen that while I effectually brace portable panel-fences I also allow a sufficient horizontal vibration thereof to accommodate them to the natural rising and falling of the ground and the windpressure.
Having thus described my inventiomwhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The within-described portable fence, comprising the panels AA,one panel provided with a post to, having the angular fastening-plate b, the other panel provided with a post a, having staples ff, the angular brace B, formed of the single vertical portion (1 and the diagonal portion 0, the sill c, and the fixed block g, the whole combined and arranged as shown, de scribed, and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PIIARES M. MISIILER. Witnesses:
J. F. MARTIN, JEssE HAnMoN.
