FENCE-POST.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 502,623, dated August 1, 1893. Application led September-13, 1892. Serial llo. 445,781. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, ABRAHAM C. HARRISON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county olf-Wood and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Fence-Post, of which the followingis a speci# fication.

The invention relates to improvements in fence posts.

The object of the present invention is to p rovide a fence post which will be simple in construction, strong and durable, and which will be adapted to serve as a corner 'postor a gate post.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto appended In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective View of a fence post constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view.

Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.

1, 1 designate pairs of iron rods forming a fence post and arranged parallel with one another, and having their lower ends cemented in the upper end of atubular base 2, and thereby secured to thelatter. The metal rods l ot' yeach pair are constructed of a single piece of metal doubled on itself, and the"`up per endsof the rods are secured to a shank 3 of an ornamental top 4'. The hollow tubular base 2 is constructed of clay, earthenware or similar material, and its upper end is closed by cement 5 in which the lower ends ofthe rods are embedded.

A fence section 6 is securedV to the rods of the fence post by horizontally disposed clips 7 arranged near the top and bottom of the post, and receiving the same and the post of the fence section. The endsof the yclips are threaded and are provided with nuts 8 which bear against clip plates 9.

The post is Vsupported and sustained in proper position against the strainlincident to its use, by means of a horizontal anchor rod 10 centrally secured to the post atthe' top of the base, and consisting of an outer inclined portion 11, and an inner horizontal portion 12, and by means of an inclined brace 13 hav ing parallel sides and extending from the top of the post to the end of the horizontal por- ,tion 12 ot the anchor rod, 'lhe sides of the inclined brace receive between them the fence sections and are tubular and have their ends connected by upper and lower staples 14 which are" secured, respectively, to the top of the fencepost by an eye-bolt, or equivalent, and to the end of the horizontal portion of the anchor rod which is .provided with an eye 15. The anchor rod is provided at its center with an eye 16 which is arranged between each pair of the rods of the fence post and is secured to them by means of a bolt 17 and the ends of the anchor rod have secured to them blocks 18 and 19- of stone or other suitable material. The inclined portion of the anchor rod extends downward into the ground and with its block 1S aiords a secure anchor for the fence post;`and the inclined brace and the horizontal portion of the anchor rod which are secured together and are supported upon the block 19, serve to brace the fence post against inward movement.

In the accompanying drawings the fence post is shown connected with a fence panel, but the horizontal clips may be readily employed for the connection of a gate as will readily Vbe seen. .-x

It will readily be seen that the post is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, strong and durable, and is adapted to be advantageously employed as an end or corner post or as a gate post, and that it may be readily erected.'

The 'shank of the top 4 is secured between the upper ends of the'rods of the post by a bolt 20 which is arranged in the connecting bendsipofY the rods, thereby preventing the shank' of the top being pulled outward from the post. The lower portion of the shank of the top is secured between the sides of the upper horizontal clip, which prevents K any lateral movement of the shank.

What I claim is- Y 1. A fence post comprising a tubular base having its upper end closed withcement, the

2. A post comprising a tubular base having its upper end closed with cement, the pairs of rods each constructed of a single piece of metal and having their lower ends indented in the base, the top having a shank secured between the upper ends of the rods, an anchor rod secured between its ends to the post and having an outerinclined portion, and an inner horizontal portion, and the inclined brace extending from the end of the horizontal portion of the anchor rod to the top of the post and having parallel sides adapted to receive a fence panel or section, substantially as described.

3. A fence post comprising a. tubular base, the pairs of rodshaving their lower ends embedded in the base, a top having a shank secured between the upper ends of the rods, an anchor rod having a horizontal and an inclined portion and provided near its center with an eye arranged between said rods and provided at the end of the horizontal portion with an eye, a securing device passing through the eye at the center of the anchor rod and securing the latter to the post, and the inclined brace having parallel sides and having its upper end secured to the post and its lower end engaging the eye of the horizontal portion of the anchor rod, substantially as described.

The combination with a fence section or panel, of a fence post provided near its top with an eye, an anchor rod disposed longitudinally of the fence and centrally secured to the post near the bottom thereof and provided at its ends with blocks and having at one end an eye, and the inclined brace having parallel tubular sides receiving the fence section or panel between them and having their ends connected by staples inserted in them and' engaging the eye of the post and the eye of the'anchor rod, substantially as described.
