f No. 444,382. Patented Jan. .6, 1891.v
TRV- L H Arran/VH.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
SAMUEL M. J. HOUSE, OF HILLSBOROUGH, VIRGINIA.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,382, dated January 6, 1891.
Application i'lled October 16, 1890., Serial No. 368,294. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL M. J. HOUSE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hillsborough,in the countyof Loudoun and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Fences ,and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in fences; and it more especially consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of which it is composed, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an elevation of a panel of my improved fence, and Fig. 2 is an elevation of one of the posts of the said fence, showing the position which it assumes when it is being wired.
Each of the fence-posts l consists of a transverse block or base 2, which should be of suflicient weight to give stability to the post, and which rests upon a surface of the ground, the said block having the standard 3 rigidly secured to one side thereof, and also having the jaw 4 pivoted to the same side thereof by means of the bolt 5. The upper end of the said pivoted jaw is adapted to be drawn against the upper end of the standard 3 by means of the bolts 6, which pass through the upper ends of the said standard and jaw.
The wires '7 of the fence pass between the jaw and standard of each of the posts forming a part of the fence and above the several bolts 6 thereof. It will be evident that by opening the jaw, as shown in Fig. 2, the wires may be readily put in place in the several posts and tightened, resting upon the bolts 6 of the posts thereof, after which jaws 4 may be placed against the standards 3 and drawn in place by means of the bol ts 6, thus holding the wires rfof the fence and preventing their movement. It will also be seen that as the fence-posts merely lie upon the surface of the ground the fence may be readily re moved from place to place.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent isl. The combination, with a transverse baseblock, of a standard rigidly secured to one side thereof, a jaw pivotally secured to the said block, and bolts passing through the said jaw andstandard, as described.
2. A fence consisting of a series of posts, each of the said posts being composed of a transverse base block, a standard rigidly secured thereto, a jaw pivoted to the baseblock, bolts passing through the said jaw and the standard, and wires passing between the jaws and standards of the several posts and above the bolts thereof, as described.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
