WILLIAM A. DOUGLASS, OF VENICE, MISSOURI.
FENCE-POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21, 1905.
Application led September 1l, 1905. Serial No. 277,966.
T0 @ZZ whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, WiLLIAM A. DoUeLAss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Venice, in the county of Callaway and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to vimprovements in fence-posts and means for securing the same in the ground.
The object of the invention is to provide a fence-post which may be quickly set up and when planted will be firmly held.
A further object is to provide a fence-post formed entirely of metal whichr will be simple, strong, and durable in construction, light in weight, and comparatively inexpensive in cost.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fence-post constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken across the base of the post.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, I denotes a post which is formed of a front and rear section 2 and 3, each of said sections being bent or folded upon itself. The edges of the front section are inserted between the edges of the rear section. Said sections are then riveted or otherwise secured together, as shown. In the folded edge of the front section is formed a series of horizontally-disposed notches 4, with which are adapted to be Into the fold of the front section 2 is adapted to be inserted a vertically-disposed locking rod or bar 5, which is inserted at the upper end of the post and intersects each successive notch 4, thereby holding the line-wires ofthe fence in place in said notches.
The lower end of the post is reduced to form a shoulder 6, and on said reduced end is arranged a lower base-plate 7. This base-plate 7 is provided with a slot 8, through which the reduced end of the post projects, said plate sage of the post through said slot 8.
Above the lower base-plate 7 is arranged an upper base-plate 9, said upper plate being bowed or curved upwardly midway between its ends, as shown at IO, and is provided with a slot 12, through which the post is adapted to pass. Through the lower end of the post immediately below the curved or bowed portion of the plate 9 is arranged a transversely- Adisposed pin or bar 13, said pin being adapted to bear against the under side of the bowed plate 9 to prevent the post from pulling upwardly or becoming disengaged from said base-plates. At the outer ends of the baseplates 7 and 9 are arranged anchor-plates 14, said anchor-plates being provided on their upper ends with laterally-bent attaching members 15, which are inserted between the ends of the base-plates 7 and 9, and through said ends and the attaching members are arranged alined bolt-holes in which are disposed bolts whereby said parts are connected together.l
The anchor-plates 14 are preferably twisted between their ends, as shown at 16, by which arrangement they are more firmly held in the ground.
A post constructed as herein shown and described may be quickly set up or taken down and when arranged in a set-up position will securely hold the line-wires of the fence, which may be arranged thereon at any suitable distance apart.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the'construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A fence-post formed of sheet-metal sections folded and secured together, one of said sections having formed in its folded edge a vertical series of notches to receive the linewires of the fence, a locking-rod inserted into said notched, folded edge, to hold said fence# wires in place, base-plates secured to the lower end of said post, and twisted anchor-plates se-v IOO IIO
gether, one of said sections having formed in its folded edge a Vertical series of notches to receive the line-wires of the fence, a lockingrod to be inserted into said notched folded edge to hold said fence-wires in place, a shoulder formed on the lower end of said post, a lower apertured baseplate arranged on the lower end of said post to engage said shoulder, an upwardly-curved apertured base-plate arranged on said post above said lower baseplate and secured thereto, a transversely-disposed piu arranged through said post between said base-plates, and means where by said baseplates are secured to the ground, substantially as described.
3. A fence-post formed of sheet-metal sections folded upon themselves and secured together, one of said sections having formed in its folded edge a vertical series of notches to receive the line-wires of the fence, a lockingrod to be inserted into said notched, folded edge to hold said fence-wires in place, a shoulder formed on the lower end of said post, a lower apertured base-plate arranged on the lower end of said post to engage said shoulder, an upwardly-curved apertured base-plate arranged on said post above said lower baseplate and secured thereto, a transversely-disposed pin arranged through said post between said base-plates, anchor-plates having angularly-bent upper ends, the edges of said angularly-bent ends being bent upwardly to receive the ends of said base-plates, and means whereby said ports are connected together, substantially as described.
ln testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
