SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 110,266,988, dated November '7, 1882.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known tha-t I, WILLIAM GLEASON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Fences; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and l exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawi`ngs,'and toletters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part ol' this specilcation.
My invention relates to improvements in fences, and pertains more especially to the posts and the device by which the wiresv are attached to them.
The object ot' my improvementis to provide a device by which the barbed wires are readily attached and detached to the posts without disturbing them.
My invention is further explained hy reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l represents a side View, and Fig. 2 a perspective view, ofthe same.
Like parts are represented by the same ret'- erence-letters i-n both views.
The post is formed of two bars of iron, A and A', which are connected rigidly together, as shown in Fig. 2, by bolts b b b. The bars A A are retained at the required distance apalt by the blocks a a a, which blocks are interposed between the bars, and thus firmly secured by the bolts b, which pass through them. The lower block, C, extends below the side bars, and such extended end is pointed, so that the post is readily driven into the ground.
C U are angular recesses, formed in the edges of the respective bars A and A', for the reception of the barbed wires B. A greater or less number ot' recesses are formed, according to the height of the fence or the number of wires employed. The recess in one of the bars A is formed higher than that in bar A. The entrance to one of the slots, C', is formed at its upper end, and the entrance to slot C is formed at the lower end of said slot, so that the wire B,when tight, is drawn up in one recess and down in the other away from the rcspective entrances, as shown, whereby it is prevented from being disengaged.
To enable me to attach the upper wire, B, nearer the upper end ofthe post, I substitute the link E and holt b' for the recesses shown below. The link e is provided with an opening, d, at or near its center, through which the wires B and bolt b are inserted.
Bars may be attached to the posts at either top or bottom or at intermediate intervals, as occasion may-require.
F is a bar attached to the post near its lower end.
D is a4 metallic clasp, preferably made of heavy round iron, capable of being bent at the desired angles, and its respective ends are curved forward, t'orming'hooks f and ff, as shown. The claspD is retained at the desired height in connection with the post by recess E, through which the hook upon the lower short arm ot' the clasp engages. The upper long arm ot' theclasp extends to the rear edge ot' the post, and the hook j' engages upon such rear edge, whereby the t'ront end of such clasp is retained in a true vertical position and a strong and rigid support is formed for the ends of the bar.
When arocky bottom is encountered, so that the posts cannot be driven a. suiicient depth, block or point C is dispensed with and the respective bars A and A are made longer and extended forward and rearward beneath the surface of the ground, thus serving as braces, whereby sutlicient stability is attained.
Having thus described my invemiomwhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination ofthe two parallel bars A A', provided with angular recesses C C', with the interposing blocks a, retaining-bolts b, and wire cables B, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
