SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,508, dated. December 22, 1896- Application filed May 4, 1896. Serial No. 590,071. (No model.)

To all whmn it may concern:

Be it known that I, HENRY L. FERRIS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Harvard, in the county of McHenry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a certain new and improved metal fence-post, the purpose of said invention being to devise a post which shall be cheap and ornamental and which shall at the same time provide means for fastening it securely and firmly in the ground.

To such end the invention consists in certain features of construction, which will be fully described below and clearly pointed out in the appended claims.

The invention is illustrated in the drawings furnished herewith by means of six figures, of which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a fence-post, illustrating my invention in its preferred form. Fig. 2 is a view, upon an enlarged scale, of a portion of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similarly-enlarged view of the lower end of the post, partly in section, to show the means by which the point of the same is fastened to the.

In the form here shown the post consists of two pieces of angle-iron A B, spaced slightly apart and held in position by means of bolts 0 and washers D D, bent inward toward the post to fit the oblique sides thereof. Below the ground the two pieces of angle-iron are bent away from each other to form a loop E, at the bottom of which they are again bent toward each other and extended downward to form a prong F, at the end of which is secured apoint G. This point Gis secured to the post by means of an upward extension 9 within the same, having an eye g, and a bolt H, extending through between the two pieces of angle-iron and engaging therewith by means of washers similarly shaped to those described above in connection with the upper portion of the post. The washers D above the ground have staple-shaped extensions cl, (see Figs. 2 and 4,) through which wires may be passed to form the fence. Within the loop E a flat strut I is placed to space the sides thereof apart and also to prevent the twisting and lateral movement of the post.

In securing the post in the ground a hole is first made large enough to receive the loopshaped extension. The prong Fis then either driven down into the ground or placed in a smaller hole tightly fitted thereto and the dirt filled in around the post and within the loop thereof. The prong prevents lateral movement of the lower end of the post and the strut I of the upper end. The dirt being packed in within and about the loop effectually prevents the pulling up of the post.

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A fence-post comprising a pair of angleirons arranged with the inner angles adj aceut to each other, washers, D, D, bolts, 0, lying between the angle-irons and connecting the washers, loop, E, prong, F, point, G, having the extension, g, and the bolt, II, adapted to secure the point to the prong.

2. Afence-post composed of a pair of angleirons held together by means of the washers,

D, D, and bolts, 0, and formed into a loop,

E, and prong, F, and a point, G, having the upward extension, 9, provided with the eye, g, and the bolt, 11, adapted to pass between the angle-irons and'through the eye and secure the point to the prong.

3. The combination with the two members A, B, securely held together above the ground and bent away from each other to form the loop, E, beneath the ground and the prong, F, at the lower extremity of said loop, of the point, G, secured to said members by means of an extension, g, therein and a bolt, H; substantially as described.
