GEORGE \V. BOND, OF ADRIAN, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF, CHESTER C. VAN DOREN, AND LEVI H. ROATH, OE SAME PLACE.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,930, dated July 22, 1890.
Application filed August 3, 1889. $eria1 No. 319,608. (No model.)
T 00% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE NV. BOND, acitizen of the United States, residing at Adrian, in the county of Lenawee and State of Michi- 5 gan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eence-Posts; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap- [O pertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in fence-posts, and more particularly to that class of metal fence-posts which are used in the construction of wire fences; and it consists in certain novelty in the construction of said post and the means employed for attaching the wires to the same, all of which I will now proceed to point out and describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in
Which-- Figure 1 is a perspective of a fence-post constructed in accordance with my said invention, showing one or more wires attached to the same. Fig. 2 is a perspective taken on the opposite side of the post from that shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same, looking down.
Referring to said drawings, A represents a fence-post constructed of suitable metal and formed V-shaped in cross-section and tapering from the bottom to the top. a are vertical strengthenin g-flanges formed on each side of the V-shaped portion of the postand extending from the top to the bottom of the 3 5 same. The lower end or base of said post is split, and the lower ends of the \l-shaped portion of the post are bent out substantially at right angles, forming feet or supportingflanges b on one side of said post. The lower ends of the flanges a are also bent out, forming feet or supporting-flanges c on the opposite side of the post from the feet I). The lower portion or base of the post, when in use, is preferably sunk a suflicient distance below 5 the surface of. the ground to be free from the effects of frost, and the feet or supportingflanges of the same prevent said post from tilting or canting to either side, and at the same time forming an anchor to prevent the post from being pulled up on undulating or uneven surfaces. In the apex of the V-shaped portion of said post are formed downwardlyextending notches D, in which the wires are adapted to be secured.
E represents the Wires, which are first insorted in the notches, so as to leave a space between the same and the inside of the V- shaped portion of the post. In this space a securing pin or bolt F is inserted, which looks the same in place and effectually prevents said wires from being detached from the post when said pin is in place, the shape of the notch in which said wires are placed also aiding in holding the same on the post. Instead of using a securing-pin for each wire, a long pin or rod may be used. The wires being in place, said long rod or pin may be inserted from the top of the post, passing down from said top to the bottom of the same and between said post and wires.
I am aware of the patent of Brinkerhoif, No. 189,918, granted April 2-1, 1877, which shows a post provided with strengtheningflanges having their lower ends bent outward at right angles and forming lips for holding the post down, and therefore I do not herein claim, broadly, a post having strengtheningflanges provided with projecting lips or anchor-feet at their lower ends; but
What I do claim as new, and desire to secure So by Letters Patent, is
The metal fence-post A, formed V-shaped in cross-section and provided with the vertical strengthening-flanges a, and having its base split and the lower end of the V-shaped portion of the post bent to form supporting feet or flanges Z), and the lower ends of the flanges a bent to form feet or flanges 0, located on the opposite side of the post from the flanges or feet b,said feet I) and 0 being substantially at right angles to the post and its strengthening-flanges a, and having the notches D, for the reception of the wires, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE W. BOND.
Witnesses:
A. E. BARAGAR, R. B. ROBBINS.
