J. HUNT-ER'.
PBNGB POST.
Patented Aug. 10, 1886.
N. PETERS. PhulmLimogmpher, washinglm D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OrricaO JAMES HUNTER, OF RUFFS DALE, PENSYLVANIA.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No` 347,298, dated August 10, 1-886.
Application tiled December 3l, 1885. Serial No. 187,271. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JAMES HUNTER, acitizen of the United States, and av resident of Ruffs Dale, in the county of Vestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence- Posts; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionof the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved fence-post. Fig. 2 is a similar View of one-half part of the same. Fig. 3 is a crosssection on line x x. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section of the post, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modification of the post.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to fence-posts; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts of a post, which'will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
My improved post may be made of metal or any other material, as may be desired. If made of metal it may be cast, or it may be made from boiler-iron or other sheet metal of sufficient thickness by stamping the saine in a suitable die.
As will be seen by the drawings, the post consists of two parts or halves, A and B, which when placed together form a tubular post, circular in crosssection and tapering gradually from the ,base toward the top. One or both of the parts A B has notches a b, through which the strands of wire are inserted in building upthe fence.
The parts A and B are h'eld together by means of one or more rings, (shown at 0,) which are driven down upon the post from the top ofthe same ,which will bind the two parts A and B firmly together, or screw-threaded bolts may be driven through the apertures F, and secured upon their screw-threaded ends with the nuts G, as `shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
The flaring lower portion of the post, constituting the base, which is inserted into the ground, is made with a sharp lower edge, as shown at D, and by making this part ot' the post with a large inside chamber, it will not be easily affected by frost, but will retain its position in the ground unaffected by theupheaving caused by frosts. This construction of the base also operates to hold the post firmly in the ground, as the earth may be packed rmly around it, besides filling the hole inside of the post.
If desired, a recess, A, may be cut in the post near its upper end for the reception of a rail, A2, which will bernore readily observed by the animals inclosed.
Thel top of the post is provided with a series of notches or serrations, E, for the purpose of facilitating the removal of the post when desired by inserting a bar or lever into these notches and working the same sidewise, whieh loosens the post in the ground, so that it may be easily withdrawn without the necessity of taking the two parts A B apart from each other.
I am aware that itis not new to constructa fence-post consisting of two tapering parts and provided with clamps to secure the same, and I do not claim such construction, broadly; but
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- A tubular fence post consisting of two tapering sections, having seri-ations at the top,
flared at their lower ends, with beveled edges on the inner sides of said lower ends, and notches in the sides of one ofthe said sections, in combination with the clamps for securing the two parts together, substantially as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES HUNTER.
