UNITED STATES. PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM CLARK PAYNE, OF oLINToN orrY, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WIRF F ENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 203,938, dated May 21, 1878; application filed February 15, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM CLARK PAYNE, of Clinton city, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and-use the same, reference being had. to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
' Figure 1 is a perspective view of the post with the foot-piece and a wire attached. Fig. 2 is a side view of the upper part of the post with a wire attached and the key on the wire side of the post. Fig. 3 is a side view of the upper part of the post, showing a wire attached, with the key on the opposite side of the post. Fig. 4 is a transverse section online w w of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a transverse section on line y y of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is an enlargedperspective view of the band for holding the wire. Fig. 7 is a vertical section of the band.
Myinvention relates to metallic fences; and
consists of a band for holding the wire, constructed in two parts, to be interlocked together around a fence-post and held in place by a key at any required point, and provided with a lug adapted, to hold the wire either as may be required, by the adjustment of the key which holds the band on the post, as hereinafter described, and-shown in the drawings.
A is the post, of any required shape and material, usually of gas-pipe.
B is a foot or ground piece, of a V shape, as shown in the drawings, made usually of cast-iron cast on the post.
0 is a collar or band, made in two parts, of any suitable material, usually of malleable iron, interlocked together at the ends, as shown in the drawings. The lower part of the interlocking ends of one-half of the band is made solid, as shown at a, forming bearings for the interlocked ends of the other half of the band, as shown. in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings.
The band is provided with a lug, b, curved upward, forming a holder for the wire D. The band is held in place on the post by a key, 0, driven downward between the band and the post, as shown in the drawings.
To adjust the band on a post, the part having the bearings a is placed on one side of the post, and the other part is placed on the other side of the post, above, and slid downward, interlocking the ends, and the key is then inserted, securing the band at the, required position on the post.
It is readily seen that this band may be ad- 'justed at any required position on a post, be-
low or above other bands or wires.
When it is desired to confine the wire firmly so it will not render, then the key is inserted on the wire side between the points of the lug b, so that the key will impinge against the wire, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and5 of thedrawings. When it is desirable to leave the wire loose, to render freely through the holder, the key, is inserted on the opposite side of the post, as shown in Fig. 3. v
The base or ground piece, being the proper distance from the lower end of the post, is inserted in the ground justbelow the surface to hold the post in an upright position.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, in a metallic fence, is
The band C, in two parts, constructed to be interlocked around a fence-post, and provided with a wire-holder, b, adapted to hold the wire either loosely or firmly by the adjustment of the key which holds the band in place on the post, substantially as and for the purposes described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I hereto'affix my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
v WILLIAM CLARK PAYNE.
