" FENCE-POST.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,271, dated October 12, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, GEORGE B. MCLEAN and JAMES HENRY, of Galena, in the county of Jo Daviess and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain improvements in fence-posts; and it has for its objects to provide a fence-post constructed in sections, secured together by a single connection and provided with attachments for the fence boards, rails, or wires secured between the sections, when the same are clamped together, as more fully hereinafter specified. These objects we accomplish by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which represents an elevation of our improved fence-post, with a portion broken away showing the parts in section.

The letter A indicates the fence-post complete, and a a the sections of which it is composed. The lower sections, a, are rectangular in form, and constitute that portion of the post which is to be buried in the ground. The upper sections, a, are each in the shape of a truncated cone, and each lower and upper section is formed with a central longitudinal aperture, I). These apertures all fall in line when the sections are placed properly together, and form a continuous longitudinal opening, through which is passed a headed bolt, B, the head of which binds against the end of the section at one extremity, the other end of the bolt being screw-threaded and provided with a nut, O, by which the parts are secured together. The out is formed with an eye or socket, c, by means of which a suitable rod or implement may be employed to obtain sufficient leverage to clamp the sections securely together.

The letter E indicates the fence board, rail, or wire attachments. These consist of short metal wires or rods sitting in transverse grooves in the faces of the respective sections, and clamped between the same. The said rods or wires are provided with loops, hooks, or eyes at their projecting ends, which may be rectangular, circular, or of other shape, according to the shape of the boards, rails, or wires of the fence.

In some instances the wires may be clamped directly between the sections, as indicated at e in the drawing.

The sections may be made of any suitable material, such as metal or stone, for instance, and may be formed by molding, casting, hewing or otherwise. In practice, however, it will be found expedient to construct them of pottery, on account of the cheapuess and durability of such material and the facility with which it can be brought to the proper form.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- Ih combination with the sections of a fencepost having longitudinal openings secured together by a longitudinal scrcw-bo1t, and provided with transverse grooves on their adjoining faces, the rail or wire connections, located in said grooves and clamped therein between the respective sections, substantially as specified.
