WIRE-STRETCHER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 14, 1916.
Application filed April 14, 1915. Serial No. 21,391.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES W. EDWARDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Robertson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vire- Stretchers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wire stretchers, designed for the purpose of stretching wire fences, and one of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a simple device which will operate efiiciently for stretching a woven wire fence by the last post without setting an extra post for this operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for engaging the clamping bar of a wire fence and connections between said means and a threaded hook passing through a standard and adjustable by means of'a double wrench and nut.
The foregoing and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation and partial section of a wire stretcher made in accordance with this invention, and Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the standard, and 2 is the last post of the fence. The standard 1 is braced by guy rods 3, havin anchor pins 4: driven into the ground at opposite sides diagonally from the standard 1. The guy rods are held to the top of the standard by means of a staple 5. A strengthening plate 7 is secured centrally at the opposite side thereof. Braces 9 and 10 are connected to the standard 1 by means of metal collars 11 and 12, said collars being connected to the braces and the standard by means of bolts 13. The collar 12 may be adjusted on the standard 1 and held in adjusted position by means of the pin 14-. The braces 9 and 10 are secured to the post 2 by means of spikes 15.
Lap hooks 16 are adapted to engage the clamping bars 17 of the wire fence, said lap hooks being swlveled to a rmg 18 to which a chain 19 is connected, said chain being provided with a loop 20 which engages a hook 21, the hook 21 being provided with a threaded shank 22 which extends through the standard 1 and through the plate 7 and the plate 8. A nut 23 is fitted to the threaded shank 22 and bears against the plate 8. A two-handed wrench 241 is applied to the nut for turning the same and stretching the fence.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a wire fence stretcher made in accordance with this invention is simple in construction, can be readily connected to the fence, and will operate efliciently for stretching a fence by the last post without requiring the use of a separate post driven into the ground.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined in the claim.
What is claimed is In a wire stretcher, a standard, braces connected to the upper and lower end of said standard, collars being connected to the braces, the upper collar adapted to be ad justed on said standard, means secured to the top of the standard and extending on opposite sides for holding the same in a vertical position, said braces being secured to the fence post, reinforcing plates secured to the central portion of the standard and on opposite sides thereof, said reinforcing plate and standard provided with transverse openings, a hook having a threaded shank extending through the opening of the plate and standard, a nut fitted on the threaded end of said shank, means for turning said nut and moving said standard in either direction and lap hooks connected to a chain attached to said hook for stretching a wire fence.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES V7. EDWARDS.
