SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 750,750, dated January 26, 1904.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADONIRAM J. CHANDLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Altoona, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Fence-Wire Stretcher, of which the following is a specification.
My object is to provide a simple, strong, and durable fence-wire stretcher specially adapted to be detachably fixed to a fence post for stretching and fixing a wire to a line of fixed posts, as required in making and repairing wire fences.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of elements, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my complete invention specially adapted to be detachably fastened to a fixed post. Fig. 2 shows the machine fixed to a post as required for practical use. Fig. 3 is a face view, and Fig. 4 a side view, partly in section, of a reversible ratchet on the handle for operating the screw.
The numeral designates the straight and main portion of the frame adapted for connecting a screw and wire-holding devices therewith. It has an integral jaw 12 at one end and a bearing 13 for a screw formed on the inner end of the jaw, as shown, or in any suitable way. A screw 14 is extended through the bearing 13. A mating jaw 16, fixed to the rear end of the screw 14, is slidably connected with the flat extension 17 at the rear end of the-frame 10 by a loop 18, integral with the inner end of the jaw.
To clamp the jaws 12 and 16 to a post, a screw-threaded sleeve 19 is provided with a plurality of teeth or projections 20 at its outer end and placed on the screw 14, and a handle 21 is provided with a stud 22 to engage said projections, and a coil-spring 23, placed on the sleeve, will engage the bearing 13 at the innor end of the jaw 12 in such a manner that by vibrating the handle or rotating it the two jaws will be moved toward each other and bite fast to the post. The inner edge of the bore of the handle is chamfered, as shown in Fig. 4, as required, to allow flexure to the handle for moving the stud 22 in and out of engagement with the projection 20 on the sleeve 19. The spring 23 will normally retain the handle in engagement with the sleeve, as required, for rotating the sleeve on the screw 14.
A wire-holding device consisting of a bar 24, bifurcated at one end and provided with a shoulder 25 and an extension 26 at its free end, is pivoted on top of the jaw 12, and a lever 27, having an eccentric 28 on its end, is pivotally connected with said bifurcated end and extension 26 by a screw 29, extending upward from said bifurcated end and extension. A fiat bar is pivotally connected with the bar 24 to overlie said bar and the eccentric 28 and is detachably connected with the screw29 by a thumb-nut 31. The end of the bar 30 has a finger-hold 32 on its end to facilitate handling the machine.
A second wire-holding device consists of a bearer 33, fixed on the inner end of the jaw 16, and a lever 34, having an eccentric 35, is pivoted to the bearer.
In practical use when the machine is fastened to a fence-post, as shown in Fig. 2, and
a fence-wire extended therethrough, as indicated by dotted lines, and the wire clamped fast by the lever 34 and the end of the wire extended past the eccentric 28 the lever 27 can be moved into position to operate the eccentric 28 as required to clamp the wire fast and then by moving the lever forward and the lever 34 rearward to loosen the hold of the eccentric 35 the wire will be stretched and advanced forward and held as required for stretching it from one post to another and then fastening it to the post.
Having thus described the purpose, construction, and operation of my invention, its practical utility will be obvious to wire-fence makers and others familiar with the art to which it pertains, and
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a fence-wire stretcher, a frame having a toothed jaw extending at right angles at one end and a bearing for a screw at the inner end of said jaw, a screw extended through said bearing and a jaw extended at right angles from the end of the screw and parallel with the jaw on the end of the frame, a bar bifurcated at one end to produce a shoulder, an extension at its bifurcated end and its other end pivoted to the free end of the jaw extending from the end of the frame and a lever having an integral eccentric at its end pivoted in said bifurcated end of said bar and means for operating the screw, arranged and combined for the purposes stated.
2. In a fence-wire stretcher, a frame having a toothed jaw extending at right angles at one end and a bearing for a screw at the inner end of said jaw, a screw extended through said bearing and a jaw extended at right angles from the end of the screw and parallel with the jaw on the end of the frame, a bar having a shoulder and an extension at its free end pivoted to the free end of the jaw extending from the end of the frame and a lever having an eccentric pivoted to said extension and a bearer on the inner end of the jaw on the end of the screw and a lever having an eccentric on its end pivoted to said bearer and means for operating the screw, arranged and combined for the purposes stated.
3. A fence wire stretcher comprising a frame consisting of a straight bar having a toothed jaw extending at right angles from one end, abearer for a screw at the inner end of the jaw, a bar, having a shoulder and an extension at its free end, pivotally connected with the outer end of the jaw and a lever having an eccentric at one end pivoted to the extension of said pivoted bar, a screw having a toothed jaw at its rear end slidingly connected with the end of the frame, a bearer on the inner end of the jaw on the screw, a lever having an eccentric on its end pivoted to said bearer and means for operating the screw, arranged and combined to operate in the manner set forth for the purposes stated.
