Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Soroinob.v CHARLES Prossim, a citizen of the United States, residing at Onondaga, in the county of Ingham and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamping Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in clamping devices and particularly to a clamping device adapted to be used to securely hold a wire, when the same is being stretched.
The object of my invention is to provide a clamping device which may bereadily secured in engagement with a wire.
A .further object of my invention is to provide means whereby a plurality of clamps may be attached at desired height upon a connecting rod or post, and, a still further object is to provide means whereby the clamps may be readily disengaged from the wires.
Other Objects and advantages will be hereinafter made clearly apparent in the specification and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred forms which my invention may take.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation showing a plurality of clamps applied to use in stretching a fence. Fig. 2 is a sideelevation showing the two lower clamps shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view, as seen on line 3 3, Fig. 2, showing the construction of one of the clamps. Fig. 4t is a horizontal sectional view as seen on line -l-a, Fig. 2, showing the construction of the lower cla-mp, and, Fig. 5 is a plan view showing the form of wrench employed by me in connection with the clamps.
Referring to the drawings, in which similar reference numerals designate correspond ing parts throughout the several views, 6 is a bar or post, which is preferably rectangular in cross section, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and is of a height greater than the height of the fence it is desired to stretch.
l/Vhen employing my clamp in stretching a fence, I use a slightly modified form oi clamp at the top and bottom of the bar 6, said form of clamp being clearly shown in the lower portion of Fig. 2 and in Fig. '-l.
In the intermediate positions upon the bar G I employ the form of clamp shown in the upper portion of Fig. 9. and in Fig. 3.
Referring particularly to the form of clamp shown in F 3 and in the upper portion of Fig. 2, it will be seen that said clamp is formed from a single piece of material and comprises a base plate 7, L- shaped members 8 and 9 at its upper and lower ends, and L-shaped members 10 and 11 upon its sides. The L-shaped member S is bent outwardly from the base 7 and its end then bent downwardly so as to parallel said base, while the L-shaped member 9 is bent outwardly and its end then bent upwardly to parallel the base 7, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
The L-shaped members 10 and 11. are so bent as to extend around the bar 6, said bar being loosely received and held between the ends and sides of said members and the base 7. The end of the member 8 is apertured and a bolt 12 is extended therethrough and is screw threaded into the base 7 so that said bolt, when turned in said base 7, will bear against the side of the bar 6 and will clamp said bar between the end of said bolt and the ends of the members 10 and 11. The bolt 12 also acts as a pivot pin for the movable member 13 of my clamp, which is .dispo-sed on said bolt between the end of the member 8 and the base 7. The end of the member 13 is slightly curved and provided with a plurality of wire engaging teeth 14. The end of the member 13 is arranged eccentrically with respect to the bolt 12 so that objects of varying sizes may be engaged between said end and the member 9, which forms the stationary jaw of my clamp. A pin 15 is secured to or formed integrally with the side of the member 13 and extends outwardly therefrom, for a purpose hereinafter made clearly apparent.
The clamp shown in Fig. 4; is similar to the clamp heretofore described, with the exception of the L-shaped member 11. Instead of forming the member 11, the base plate 7 is extended to one side to form the ear 16. A block 17, which is shaped in elevation similar to the ear 1G, is secured thereto by means of bolts 1S, or in any other preferred manner, and said block has an eX- tension 18, said extension and the end of said block taking the place of the L-shaped member 11. The ends of the ear 16 and the block 17 are drilled through to receive a pin 19, which acts as a pivot pin for the U-shaped member 20. The U-shaped member 20 is adapted to have secured thereto a suitable chain 2l, which is adapted to be secured to the usual or any preferred form of stretching device (not shown).
In Fig. 1, I have shown the upper and lower clamping member provided with the U-shaped member 20 and have shown a section` of stretching chain connected thereto, the intermediate clamps being similar to the clamp shown in Fig. 3. I have also shown the clamps secured to the longitudinal wires of a fence. lVhen so secured, the stretching device (not shown) is operated until said` longitudinal wires are stretched to the desired degree, and the same are then secured in the usual manner to one of the line posts (not shown) of the fence.
In Fig. 5, I have shown a form of wrench, which is particularly adapted for use with my clamp. Said wrench comprises a shank 22 anda square apertured end 23, which is adapted to be engaged with the head of the bolts 12, the opposite end of said shank being provided with an obliquely disposed end 24; and with a notch 25 adjacent said end. The opposite side of said shank is also provided with a notch 26, said notch being arranged obliquely with respect to the notch 2 5, said notches being in a line substantially parallel to the obliquely disposed end 24:.
.Vhen rit is desired to loosen one of the clamps, the wrench is disposed so that the notch26 will receive the bolt 1Q, therein and the notch 25 receive the pin 15 therein, as indicated by Fig.1. A slight movement of the wrench will loosenthe member 13 from engagement withthe wire and, after all the clamps have been loosened, the bar 6 may be moved to a new position and the clamps again tightened into engagement with the longitudinal wires of the fence and the previously described stretching operation repeated.`
While I have shown and described the preferred forms of my invention, I desire it to be understood that certain modications may be made therein without departing from thespirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim as new is:
1. Awire clamp providing a base member adapted to be tightened against a bar, a clamping plate for holding a wire against a portion of said base member, a pin on said clamping plate, and a bolt extending through said clamping plate and the base member, said bolt serving the triple function of tightening said base member against said bar, of pivoting said clamping plate and of acting as a fulcrum for the insertion of a tool between said bolt and pin for unlocking said clamping plate.
2. The herein described wire clamp comprising a base plate, oppositely disposed L- shaped members formed at the upper and lower ends of said plate, said members having their outer portions extending in opposite directions, disposed in alinement with each other, and equally spaced from said `plate and parallel to it, L-shaped side members on the sides of said plate and adapted to loosely hold the same on a bar, a bolt extending through the upper L-shaped member and through said plate for tightening the same against said har, a clamping plate pivoted at its upper end on said bolt between the outer portion of the upper L-shaped member and said plate, and adapted to clamp a wire between its lower end and the lower L-shaped member, and a pin on said clamping plate extending between the upper and lower L-shaped members and beyond the outer faces thereof, said plate and pin adapted to be engaged by a tool for unlocking said clamping plate.
3. The herein described wire clamp comprising a base plate, oppositely disposed L- shaped members on its outer face, oppositely disposed L-shaped members on its inner face and adapted to loosely hold said plate to a bar, a bolt extending through one of said l.-shaped members and through said-plate for tightening the same against said bar, a clamping plate pivoted on said bolt and adapted to clamp a wire against one of said outer L-shaped members, a pin on said clamping,plate and extending between kthe outer L-shaped members and beyond the outer face thereof, and a tool adapted to unlock said clamping plate, said tool comprising a shank having an obliquely disposed end, a notch adjacent said end and a notch opposite the lirst notch the line of said notches disposed obliquely to said shank and parallel with the end thereof, iirst said notch adapted to engage said pin, lsecond said notch adapted to engage said bolt.
