Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, KENNETH CUNNING- HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cheyenne, in the county of Roger Mills and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented cer tain new and useful Improvements in Wire- Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to devices for stretching wires, and is designed especially for fencemaking, and has for its object the production of a device simple in construction, reasonable in cost of manufacture, and that will operate satisfactorily.
My invention will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention, showing it applied to a fence-post; and Fig. 2, a top plan view of the device.
In the drawings, similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout both views.
A represents the fence-post, and B one of the linewires.
My wire-stretcher consists of a frame made of two crossed bars 1, secured together at 2 and having at one end hooks 3 to receive a chain 4 for securing the device to post A. The other ends of bars 1 are bent to form bearings 5, in which are j ournaled a roller 6, rotated by meansof crank-lever 7.
8 represents a length of chain secured to roller 6 and adapted to be secured to wire B.
9 represents a rod secured to bars 1 and having pointed rods 10 secured thereto, which engage the post A when the device is in position to brace it and hold it in the horizontal position. (Shown in Fig. 1.) One end of roller 6 is formed with ratchet-teeth 1 1, and 12 represents a gravity-pawl adapted to engage said teeth when the device is in operation.
In operation my improved stretcher is at tached to a fence-post, as shown in the drawings, and after the chain A is secured to the line-wire B to be stretched the roller 6 is rotated, by means of the crank 7, until the desired tension is given the wire. The pawl 12, engaging the teeth of ratchet 11, holds the roller from turning backward while the wire is secured to post A, after which the device is removed from the post by unfastening chain 4 from hooks 3 and chain 8 and the stretcher moved to the next post, where the operation is repeated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a fence-wire stretcher, crossed bars adapted to be secured to a post, and a roller j ournaled in said bars, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a fence-wire stretcher, crossed bars having hooks at one end, a flexible element adapted to engage said hooks, and a roller journaled in said bars, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a fence-wire stretcher, in combination with a fence post and wire, crossed bars having hooks at one end, a flexible element secured to said hooks and adapted to encircle the post, a roller journaled in said arms, a flexible element secured to said roller and adaptedto be secured to the fence-wire, a bar secured to said crossed bar, and pointed bars secured to said bar and adapted to engage the post, substantially as shown and described. In a fence-wire stretcher, in combination with a fence post and wire, crossed bars having hooks at one end, a flexible element secured to said hooks and adapted to encircle the post, a roller journaled in said arms, a crank-lever to actuate said roller, said roller being provided with ratchet-teeth, a flexible element secured to said roller and adapted to be secured to the fence-wire, a bar secured to said crossed bar, pointed bars secured to said bar and adapted .to engage the post, and a gravity-pawl pivotally secured to said bar and adapted to engage the ratchet-teeth in the roller, substantially as shown and described.
