YlUiTnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.`
EMERY E. SVARM, OF CALAMUS, IOlVA, ASSIGNOR TO THE SWARMiFENCE BUILDER TOOL COMPANY, OF DAVENPORT, IOWA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 707,732, dated August 26, 1902.
Application tiled December 12, 1901. Serial No. 85,664. (No model.)
T all 10700711/ 7Mb/ 00720077111 the levers of the tool, having acurved toothed Beit known that I, EMERY E. SWARM, a citisegment A', and B the second lever, which are zen of theUnited States, residing at Calamus, connected together by means of a pin B. in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, Lever A has a hook C pivoted to its head, 55-
have invented certain new and useful Imsaid head being concaved and adapted to it provenients in Vire-Stretchers; and I do deagainst the circumference of a post, as shown clare the following to be a full, clear, and exin Fig` l of the drawings, while the end of the act description of the invention, such as will hook pivoted thereto is adapted to engage enable others skilled in the art to which it said post to hold the lever stationary while 6o 1o appertains to make and use the same, refer- Athe second lever` B is stretching the wire. ence being had to the accompanying draw- Projecting laterally from the head of said ings, and to the letters of reference marked lever A are the pins E, which are adapted to thereon, which form a part of Vthis specificahold the lever at right angles to the post, tion. y said pins being adapted to contact with the 65 This invention relates to new and useful portions of the Apost above and below the loimprovements in wire-stretching tools for cation engaged by the head ofthe lever. A making fences, dsc.; and it consists in the projection F on said head forms one jaw of provision of means for securely holding the a staple-puller, the other complemental jaw tool to apost while the wire is being stretched F being integral with the lever B. 7o

M designates a pawl which is held normally 8o 3o The invention further consists in various in engagement with the ratchet-teeth on the details of construction and combination of head of the lever A when the tool is used in parts, dac., which will be hereinafter more the stretching of the wire. A spring N, bearfully described, and then specifically defined ing between said pawl and a projection P on in the appended claims. said curved segment, serves to normally hold 85 The invention is clearly illustrated Vin the the pawl in engagement with said ratchetaccompanying drawings, which, with the letteeth. ters of reference marked thereon, form a part Suitable wire-cutting means is provided by of this application, and in which drawings notching the two heads of theleversA and B, similarletters of reference indicate like parts as at T and T', causing the two faces of the 9c 4o of the several views, in whichheads to shear with each other.
Figure l is a plan'view showing the tool In operation when the device is used for engaging a wire to be stretched and in dotted stretching wire the hook C is caught into and lines the positions of parts when the wire is securely anchored to the post in the Amanner drawn taut. Fig. 2 is a detail View of one of illustrated in Fig. land the wire which is to 95 the levers, havingratchet-teeth thereon. Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A wire-stretching tool, comprising a lever A, a hook pivoted to the head of said lever, ratchet-teeth on the face of the lever adjacent to its pivotal point, a second lever pivoted to the hook-carrying lever, having a face in contact with said ratchet-teeth, clamping means for holding the wire to be stretched, a pawl carried by said second lever and adapted to engage the ratchet-teeth of the hookcarrying lever, as set forth.
2. A Wire-stretching tool, comprising two levers pivoted together, one of said levers having ratchet-teeth on its face, which is in contact with the face of the second lever, a springactuated pawl pivoted to the second lever, and engaging said ratchet teeth, a curved and grooved segment, secured to, or integral with
