To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE H. \VEYAN'I, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nachos-a, in the county of Lee, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vire-Stretcliers; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertaiiis to make and use the same.

This invention relates to wire stretchers and more particularly to that class which are designed to be engaged with a post and which include means for engagement around the post to hold the stretcher after it has been stretched and permit of the workman using both of his hands to secure the fence wires to the post.

Broadly speaking the invention resides in the provision of a lever having a wire engaging dog at one of its ends for clamping the wire. and a chain engaged adjnstably with the lever and adapted for ngageinmit with the post to hold the lever against movement so that the line wires may be attached to the fence.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view showing the application of my invention during the time of stretching the wire and showing the position of the stretcher by top plan, Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the position of the lever-after the wire has been stretched and during the application of the wire fastening devices to the post Fig. 3 is a detail pcrs1 )c(.-tive view of the stretcher and, Fig. l is an edge view of the same.

,Rei'en'ing more specifically to the drawings the device is shown as comprising a lever 5 including a handle 6 and a curved portion 7 which is designed to engage the post. At the extreme end of this portion 7 there is formed an upstanding lug 8 having an overhanging flange 9 and this lug S is to some degree formed by recessing the upper face of the lever as at 10, the recess being for the reception of a dog '11 which is pivoted therein as at 12 and which has its outer face serrated as at 13 and slightly spaced from the upstanding lug 8 so as to grip a fence wire, and the flange 9 upon the lug 8 overlies the said end of the dog.

Formed .upon the concaved edge of the lever is a series of teeth or serrations 14 with which is engaged iiiterchtingeably an oblong link 15 which is at one end of a chain 16, there bcingarranged at the other end of the chain a post engaging member which comprises ii. pair of diverging arms 17 having hooked ends l8 which are designed for engagement in the post in a manner which will now be explained.

In using my device the wire to be stretched is to be engaged between the dog and the lug and the lever is then engaged with the post and is pulled around the post to stretch the wire and bring it against the post for attachment thereto. After this has been done the post engaging member 17 has its hooked ends engaged with the post to hold the stretching lever in fixed position, and staples or other fastening devices are then driven into the post and secure the wire thereto.

What is claimed is-- A device of the class described comprising a curved lever having a wire chimp zit one end and provided in its concave edge with a number of serrations. and a chain having ii link interchangeably engaged with the serrations, and ii post engaging nieniheicarried at the end of the cliziiii.
