Description
JAMES PITRE, 0F CUT OFF, LOUISIANA.
WIRE-STRETCHER.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES PITRE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cut Off, in the parish of Lafourche and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wire stretchers and refers particularly t0 a hand tool of novel form by means of which barbed or plain wire can be quickly and effectively stretched to enable the securing of the wires upon the posts in a proper and rapid manner.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a wire stretcher which can be operated with ease and facility to stretch the wires and which will be of the simplest, cheapest and most durable construction to insure a practical device of this character.
To attain the desired objects, my invention consists of a hand tool for stretching wires embodying novel features of construction and arrangement of parts for service substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure l represents a side elevation of the complete tool in operative position. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation of a modified construction of my tool. Fig. 8 represents a perspective view of the rack bar which also forms a fulcrum of my device, and Fig. Il represents a perspective view of the wire gripping hand lever used in connection with the form of my device illustrated in Fig. 2.
My wire stretching tool as disclosed in Fig. l consists of the long handle bar A, the curved fulcrum arm B, braced to the handle bar by means of the strut C and terminating in the inwardly extending hook D, the fulcrum arm being preferably provided with a rack or serrated face E, which b ears against the fence post F, and acts to retain the fulcrum bar against the post in the drawing taut of the fence wire G, as clearly shown, which fence wire is engaged by the hook D.
In the form of my invention disclosed by Figs. 2, 3 and 4, the device comprises the Specication of Letters Patent.
Application led November 18, 1911.
Patented Apr. 23, 1912. serial No. 661,044.
handle bar H, the brace J, the fulcrum arm K, formed with racked face and the hook L, formed by the fulcrum bar and the angle bend M of the handle bar. In this form of the invention, the action of the fulcrum bar is precisely the same as in Fig. l, and to insure a firm and reliable grip upon the wire, I pivot to the handle bar near its grasping end the lever N, which is formed with a roughened surface O, which with the edge of the handle bar, forms a pair of jaws between which the wire is grasped and the stretching in a rapid and perfect manner is assured.
Any person skilled in the manner of building wire fences will readily understand and appreciate the advantages of this article and it will be apparent that it will perform the functions for which it is intended in a thorough and practical manner.
I claim zl. The wire stretching tool herein described, comprising the handle bar, the fulcrum bar provided with a serrated face to engage the post, the hook formed on the fulcrum and handle bar and the pivoted lever grip carried by the handle bar.
2. A wire stretching tool, comprising a handle bar provided with a pivoted lever grip at one end and having its other end bent upwardly at right angles, combined with a fulcrum bar arranged adjacent to and parallel with the upturned portion of the handle bar, the upper end of the fulcrum bar forming with the upper portion of the angular bend of the handle bar a hook or claw, and a strut connecting the lower end of the fulcrum bar with the handle bar.
8. A wire stretcher, consisting of a handle bar, a serrated fulcrum bar arranged. at right angles thereto, means for engaging the wire to be stretched, and an angular strut connecting the lower end of the fulcrum bar with the handle bar.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES PITRE.
