UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB BOATNER, OF TOIVNSHIP 1, RANGE 2, EAST, COUNTY OF AMITE, MISSISSIPPI.
TOOL.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 485,148, dated October 25, 1892.
Application filed May 14, 1892- Serial No. 432,987. (No model.)
To aZZ w/tom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB BOATNER, of Township 1, Range 2, East, in the county of Amite and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Tool, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to tools used in the construction and maintenance of wire fences; and its object is to provide a new and improved tool which is simple and durable in construction and arranged for conveniently and quickly taking up the slack in all kinds of barb or smooth wire fences.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tool as applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the tool, and Fig. 3 is a plan View of the same.
The improved tool is provided with a handle A, having its one end B made tapering, as plainly illustrated in the drawings. The end B is also formed with an outwardly-extending curved part O, which terminates in the inwardly-extending point D, the latter being approximately in line with the shank of the handle A.
On the end of the handle A opposite to the end B is secured the claw-hammer body E of usual construction and used for driving nails, staples, &c., to fasten the wires to the fence-post.
The device is used as follows: In case a wire F in the fence is slack between two posts, as shown in Fig. 1, then the operator takes hold of the handle A near the claw-hammer body E and applies the curved end B on the wire, as shown in the upper part of Fig. 1.
The curved part 0 of the end B rests on top of the wire, while the point D extends partly under the wire, the handle A being held on one side of the wire and slightly at an angle thereto, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1. When the tool is in this position, the operator makes one complete revolution of the tool in the direction of the arrow a, the bent or curved portion 0 being the fulcrum, so that a loop G is formed, as illustrated in the wire F in Fig. 1. By thus forming the loop G the slack in the wire is taken up between the two fence-posts, and in order to retain this tightened position of the wire a few more turns horizontally are given to the tool, so as to form a twist H, as illustrated on the wire F in said Fig. 1. As the end B is tapering, the tool can be readily withdrawn from the twist after the latter is formed.
It will be seen that this device is very simple in construction, can be readily manipulated without drawing any of the staples or other means for fastening the wire to the posts, or pulling the wire tight near the end thereof, as is usually done in fences of the class described. 7
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1, A tool for tightening wires of wire fences, provided with a handle having a tapering end extending from the shank of the said handle, the said tapering end being formed with the curved part C, terminating in the point D, extending inwardly and forwardly approximately in line with the shank of the handle, substantially as shown and described.
2. A tool for tightening wires of wire fences, comprising a handle and a tapering end extending from the shank of the said handle, the said tapering end being formed with the curved part 0, terminating in the point D, extending inwardly and forwardly approximately in line with the shank of the handle, and a claw-hammer body secured on the other end of the handle, substantially as shown and described.
J AOOB BOATNER.
