FENCE-POST.
Patented April 10, 1906.
Application fil d June 21, 1 905. Serial No. 266,306.
T 0 (tZZ who??? it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE H. KAUFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marienville, in the county of Forest, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the inven tion, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fence-posts.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, durable, and efficient fence-post adapted to be readily anchored in the ground and being conveniently used in wire, wood, or combined wire and wooden fences.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a combined plastic, metallic, and wooden fence-post.
WVith these and other objects in view the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the appended claim without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the present invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an elevation of the fence-post. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the fence-post. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the invention.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference character 1 designates the base of my improved post, which base may be made of cement or any other suitable plastic material, the base, regardless of the material of which it may be formed, being designed to be placed in the ground for the reception of the lower end of the metallic upright 2, which latter is T- shaped in cross-section and which may extend to the bottom of the base or only part way thereinto, as may be desired.
Connecting the metallic upright 2 and embedded in the base 1 is a brace 3, the upper end of the same being bifurcated to form spaced ears 4 for engagement with the adjacent faces of the leg portion 5 of the metallic post, the said connection being made through the instrumentality of a suitable rivet 6 and the lower end of'the said brace extending downwardly beneath the upper face of the base 1 and arranged adjacent one side edge thereof with its extremity directed inwardly of the base. It will thus be seen that the lower end of the brace 3 is embedded at one end in the base 1 and that the brace will' serve to hold the upright 2 rigidly in position with respect to the base.
The longitudinal edges 7 of the head of the metallic upright are provided with a series of perforations upon both sides of the leg part 5 thereof for alinement with corresponding perforations in the wooden upright 8, through which may be passed rivets 9 for securing the said wooden upright 8 to the outer face of the head 7 of the metallic post. It will be observed that the wooden upright 8 is of greater width than the width of the head of the metallic upright, and it will also be seen that staples, wires, or the like 10 are secured to the wooden post 8 for the securing of line-wires or strands (not shown) thereto in any desired manner.
From the foregoing it will be seen that my invention is of a simple and inexpensive nature, and I wish it to be understood that the parts may be assembled and then inserted in i the ground or a hollow may be dug in the ground and the plastic material placed therein and while in its soft condition receive the lower end of the metallic upright or post.
What is claimed is- A fence-post comprising a plastic base, a metallic post having its lower end embedded in the base, a wooden post secured to the metallic post above said base, and a brace connecting the metallic post at both of its ends and spaced therefrom intermediate its ends, one end of said brace being directed inwardly and embedded in the base and the opposite end of the brace having ears for engagement with the metallic post.
In testimony whereof I aflixmy signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE H. KAUFMAN.
