UNITE Srarns JOSEPH F. GLIDDEN, OF DE KALB, ILLINOIS.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,316, dated July 28, 1885.
(No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osurn F. GLIDDEN, a citizen of the United States. residing at'De Kalb, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a side elevation, partly in section. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional detail.
Thisinvention relates to fences; and it consists in the construction and novel combination of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates a section of a wire fence constructed in accordance with my improvement. The fence is to be erected in sections most convenient and desirable to the builder. At one end of each section I provide the fence-post 3, and at the opposite end a post, B, the post B of which I mortise through near the top, as at C, and near the ground, as at D, and intermediately of the inortises O and D, (which are provided with keys E and F,) I provide an elongated vertical slot or mortise,G. All of the mortises pass en tirelythrough the fence-posts in which they are located, and the mortises that are not provided with keys E and F are provided with pulleys H II, over which the fence-wire I runs. The posts K,intermediate of the posts B,arc bored through horizontally at M, in the direction of the length of the fence, at proper points, and the fence-wire I is passed through and rests in said holes M.
The fence-wire is secured to either key E or Ff0r instance, say, Fand is run through the lower holein the intermediate post- K, carried on to and around the lower pulleys in the post I), back through the second hole in post K, under the lower pulley, H, in the post B, thence up and over the upper pulley, H, in said post 13, back through the post K, under the pulley under the lower one of the two upper pulleys in the post B, then back through the upper hole in the intermediate post K, and is connected with the upper key in the fence-post B. The projecting ends of the keys are rectangular in crosssection, so that awrench may be applied to tighten the fence-wire in erecting the fence, or at any other time when necessary.
The keys are bored through at right angles to their axial lines, as at P, and rods or keepers Q. are inserted into the holes I,to hold the keys in positions to which they may have been turned in tightening the fence-wire.
Having thus fully described my invention,
'what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The combination, with the posts B and B, having mortises, the keys E and F, provided with holes 1?, and pulleys arranged in said mortises, of the posts K and the continuous fence'wire, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J. F. GLIDDEN.
