FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 405,251, dated J' une 18, 1889.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known' that I, AARON F. ELSEY, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Bardwell, in the county of Carlisle and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fence-posts; and it has for its object to provide a simple and improved device of this class, whereby the employment of nails for securing the rails is dispensed with.
A further object of the invention is to provide a fence-post of this character possessing advantages in point of durability and general efficiency.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a section of fence embodying my improved post. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof, taken through the post. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the posts. Fig. et is a transverse sectional View of the same. Fig. 5 is a similar view of a modiiication.
Corresponding parts in the figures are denoted by the same letters of reference.
Referring to the drawings, A designates a rigid post, preferably rectangular in crosssection and having a ysharpened or pointed lower end a., facilitating the driving of the same in the ground; The inner and outer sides a a of this post are correspondingly beveled at the upper end of the latter, forming a convergent end a2, or in lien of this the sides a may be beveled throughout their length, if found preferable. The upper end of the postis provided with a transverse eye or perforation as, extending from one beveled side through to the other.
B B designate two corresponding strips, preferably formed of plank, which are provided at their lower ends with transverse eyes or perforations b b. These strips are located one at each beveled side of the post, and are secured thereto by a bolt C, passing through the eyes or perforations in the strips and post. Upon .the end of the bolt is disposed a'nut c for clamping the strips.
In the modification illustrated in Fig. 5 I have shown the strips B with their inner surfaces beveled in opposite directions. By this construction the slot between the strips is disposed at a slight angle to the plane of the rails, thus giving a direct and side clamp to the strips.
The operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which it appertains. The posts A are first driven in the ground, and while the strips are in their loosened state the ends of the rails comprising the fence are laid between the same, one above the other, until the desired height of fence is secured. The strips are then clamped against the rails by means of the nut c, thus tightly securing the strips and rails against displacement without the necessity of nails or other securing means.
It will be obvious that the above-described post is equally efficient for both plank or rough-rail fences. In thelatter case the bevel of the sides is of a less degree than the former, thus allowing a broader space between the strips for the accommodation of this character of rail, or the post A may be broader to accomplish thesame object.
I claim as my inventionl. In a fence-post, the combination, with a post having its inner and outer sides beveled, of the two corresponding strips secured to said beveled sides and forming a clamp adaptedk to bind the rails when disposed between said strips, substantially as set forth.
2. In a fence-post, the combination, with a post having its inner and outer sides beveled. of two corresponding strips secured to said beveled sides by a bolt, and a nut disposed upon the end of the bolt adapted to clamp .i the strips against the rails when disposed between the latter, substantially as set forth.
3. The herein-described fencepost, comprising the rigid post having a pointed lower end and beveled inner and outer sides, two corresponding strips disposed one at each of said beveled sides, a bolt passing transversely through the post and strips, and a nut disposed upon the end of the bolt for clamping and securing the strips, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
