Description

UNITED STATES PATENT EEroE.
WILLIAM MCG. BUTLER, OE DYERSBURG, TENNESSEE.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 269,003, dated December 12, 1882.
` Application led August 7, 1832. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM MCG. BUT- LER, ot' Dyersburg, in the county of Dyer and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Fence, of which the following is a `in the sides, in combination with certain other elements, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specicatioinin which similar letters of reference indicate cor responding parts in all the figures. v
Figurel isalongitudinal elevation ot a panel of my improved fence, parts being shown in sect-ion. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, parts being shown in section. Fig. 3 is aperspective view ot' one of the posts. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one ot' the base-blocks. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the corner base-blocks.
The base-blocks A, made of cast-iron pret'- erably, have their upper surfaces and sides beveled toward the ends, and are provided in each side with a dovetailed recess, B. The posts C, preferably made ot' wrought-iron, are each provided in one side with a longitudinal groove, D, and at the lower end with a dovetailed tenon, E, fitting in the dovetailed recesses B. Below the bottom of the groove D the posts are each provided with an aperture, a., and in the bottom of the groove D with a series of apertures, b.
Two posts are secured in the base-blocks by means of the dovetailed tenons E in such a manner that the smooth surfaces of these posts face each other. The posts are then held together by a bolt, F, passed through the apertures a. Rods Gr are passed through the apertures d ot' two posts of opposite base- .blocks, the grooved surfaces of these posts facing each other, and these rods are held in the posts by nuts H, screwed on the threaded ends of the rods projecting from the smooth surfaces of the posts. The top rail, J, has a U-shaped clip, K, attached to each end, from the outer ends of which clips screw-pintles L are screwed on theends of these pintles.
ends ot' the top rails in any suitable manner.
can be used, and the ends of these wires can be held to the posts by means of wedges or other suitable devices.
To form corners an Octagon base-block, N, is used, which has a dovctailed recess, B,.in each side.
This fence is very strong and durable, and can be erected and taken down very easily and rapidly, as the entire panels can be set up at once, and the parts forming a panel need not be united or detached on the ield. Each panel is to be about one rod long, but may be much longer or shorter, as may be desired.
The horizontal rods or wires are to be connected with the top rail by vertical wires to prevent sagging of the horizontal wires and to stiien the fence.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to'secure by Letters Patent- 1. ln afence, the combination, with the posts C, having the vertical longitudinal grooves D, of the rail J and clips K, fastened to said rail, and having screw-pintles L nutted to the posts C, substantially as shown andrdescribed, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The polygonal baseblock having dovetailed recesses in its sides, in combination with the posts having dovetailed tenons and rods or bars connecting the posts together, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM MCGREGGOR BUTLER.
`Witnesses HICK P. DoYLE, JOHN T. BooN.
These screw-pintles L can be attached to the' In place of the rods G, plain or barbed wire y project. These pintles are passed through the upper apertures, b, of the posts. and nuts M.
