J. M. HARNISI-I. FASTENING FOR WIRE GATES.
Minn
- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH M. HARNISH, OF MANSFIELD, OHIO.
FASTEN l N G FO R WIRE GATES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent. No. 431,744, dated July 8, 1890.
Application filed February 11, 1890. Serial No. 340,009. (No model.)
To'all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH M. HARNISH, a citizen of the United'States, residing at Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenings for WVire Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improvement in fastening devices for Wire gates; and it consists in the peculiar features of construction hereinafter fully described.
I have illustrated said invention in the accompanying drawings, in which.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a fence and gate with my invention embodied therein. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of a portion of the same.
In the drawings, A represents a section of a wire fence of any well-known construction in which it is desired to form a gate. In the form shown the fence consists of three wires a, a, and a ,into which are twisted the pickets B in any desired manner. The fence is constructed and secured at suitable intervals to the posts 0, as is usual, by fastening the wires orone of the pickets thereto. In order to form a gate in a fence of this construction, I sever the wires a, a, and a adjacent to one of the posts, as shown at 00 5c, and form the free portion of the middle wire a into a loop D. This enables the section of the fence so detached at one end to be swung open to form an outlet, as will be readily seen. The post from which the section is detached is provided with the securing-lever E, pivoted to said post by means of a bolt, screw, nail, or other preferred means 6, passing through the lever and an oifset e and said lever is also provided with a hook or projection e at either side a short distance from said point of pivoting, as shown. The lever is also provided with an operating portion or handle 6 When it is desired to close the gate and secure it, the loop D is placed over one of the hooks e of the lever, and the lever is then depressed so as to draw the wires of the gate tight, and
the lever is secured in that position by means of a retaining hook or pawl F, which may be attached to the next section of the fence, as shown in the drawings, or to a peg or stake driven into the ground adjacent to the free end of the lever. I have shown it in this instance attached to the wire a of the fence, and this is a very convenient mode of construction.
The lever E having a hook e on either side, it can be used universally on either side of the fence at either end of a gate, and may be raised or lowered to tighten the Wires of the gate-section, as found most desirable or convenient.
If it is desired to use my improved fastener with a fence having no pickets, the wires will be first severed and provided with a crossbar adjacent to their free ends, the middle wire forming a loop D, as before described. In case the fence has more or less than three wires and it is not desirable to use the continuation of the most nearly central wire to form the loop, the cross-bar or end picket may be provided with a suitable loop in any desired manner.
\Vhat I claim, an d desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a fastening for wire gates, the combination, with the gate provided with a loop, of a pivoted lever having-an operating portion or handle and provided with a hook or projection on each side of the same, adapted to engage said 100p and a retaining-pawl for said lever, substantially as described.
2. In a fastening for wire gates, the combination, with the gate provided with a loop, of a pivoted lever having a hook or projection on each side adapted to engage the said loop and a retaining-pawl for said lever secured to the adjacent section of the fence, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH M. 'HARNISH.
Witnesses:
GEORGE BRINKERHOFF, SAML. MARRIOTT.
