Description
UNITED STATES PATENT EETCE.
LEVIS W'. ORTON, OF CLOUD CHIEF, OKLAHOMA TERRITORY.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 597,653, dated January 18, 1898.
Application filed November Il, 1897. Serial No. 658,169. (No model.)
To all wir/0722, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEWIS IV. ORTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cloud Chief, in the. county of Wrashita and Territory of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; andI do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to gates, and more particularly to means for securing a wire gate to a fence-post so as to form a con tinuation of the fence and permit of the gate being lowered for the purpose of gaining admission to the inclosure.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my invention, showing the gate opened. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing it closed, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
In said drawings, 1 denotes the sections of a Wire fence, and 2 the posts. The gate consists of several strands of wire 3, which are suitably connected to one of the posts at one end and have their other ends connected to a' vertical post 4. This post e is adapted to be connected to the other fence-post. The connection. forms the subject-matter of my invention.
5 denotes two blocks secured to the upper end of the post, one of said blocks being provided with a recess 6.
7 denotes a lever having an eyel8 at one end, which is pivoted upon a headed stud 9, secured to one oi' the blocks, and is provided with a curved portion l0, which is adapted to engage the gate-post, While its handle portion 11 is adapted to lit into the recess of the opposite block under the end of a hook l2. The
lower end of the gate-post is inserted through a loop secured to the fence-post.
In looking the gate the lower end of its post is inserted in the loop and the lever is swung into engagement with the upper end of the post, and by forcing the lever to the left the gate-post will be drawn up between the blocks, and in this position the lever is dropped to the recess of one of the blocks under the hook, in which position it is firmly held by the strain of the wires forming the gate.
This kind of gate is particularly adapted for wire fences on prairies or for inclosing large farms, and affords simple, convenient, and inexpensive means for entering and leaving the inclosure.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with fence posts, of a gate, one end of which is connected to one of said posts and the other end of which isprovided with a post, blocks secured to the upper end of one of said fence-posts, one of said blocks having a recess and an overhanging hook, a loop secured to the lower end of said fence-post, and a lever pivoted to one of said blocks and having a curved portion adapted to engage the gate-post, said lever adapted to rest in the recess of the block and beheld therein by the overhanging hook, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses LEWIS W. ORTON.
Vitnesses:
A. W. MELTQN, V T. C. BOULWARE.
