` UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
GEORGE J.. GOODWIN, OF ONAWA, AND JONATHAN POLLY, OF ALBATON, IOWA.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATIONforming part of Letters Patent No. 497,872, dated May 23, 1893.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE J. GOODWIN, residing at Onawa, and JONATHAN POLLY, residing at Albaton, in the county of Monona and State of Iowa, citzensof theUnited States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention has relation to posts for wire fences. We purpose the construction of an iron post which shall be composed of two parts, Viz: the ground portion, and that part to which the wires are attached, the latterbeing readily adjustable to the former.
The object attained by our invention is twofold: iirst, the post is easily driven; second, a new and simple method of securing the Wires is provided.
Reference is now had to the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure l is a view in front elevation. Fig. 2 is a View in side elevation. Fig. 3 is a view in rear elevation. Fig. i is a detail View showing ground portion of post. Fig. 5 is a top view of ground portion showing shape of the same. Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on line X-X Fig. 2, showing socket for gate hinge. Fig. 7 is a top View of post showing shape of brace heads, L. It will be seen that the upper part of this post is V-shaped, the ends being closed, and that the lower part is solid, three-cornered, and tapers downward to a point.
The same letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
P designates the upper part of post; P the lower part.
W designates the wires; R a rod which is passed downward, through an opening in top Application led August 29| 1892. Serial N0. 444,347. (N0 model.)
of the upper part of post, in front of the wires after they are inserted in the slots S.
P2 designates a round tenon on lower part of post intended to Iitinto the upper part and to be secured therein by means of the key P3 as seen in Figs. 2 and 3.
L designates brace heads on the sides of the post near the top, and also on the front of the post. These are provided in order that the post may be braced from either side and in front if desired.
L2 is an adjustable socket for a gate hinge, and may, when desired, be secured to the post in the same manner as the wires, by inserting it in the slot S. The head of the rod R furnishes means for attaching the other hinge of the gate. It will thus be seen that by the use of our invention a gate may be easily attached to any part of the fence. The necessity of a box, bench, or other elevation upon which to stand while the post is driven is obviated by first removing the upper part. The rod R which is removed before the wires are adjusted, is then inserted in the top of post and lowered as fast as the wires are placed in the slots.
Having fully and completely described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
The combination with a fence-post having transverse slots in its side edges, of fence- GEO. J. GOODWIN. JONATHAN POLLY. lVitnesses:
