FENCE-POST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 2, 1909.
Application filed February 2G, 1908. Serial No. 417,985.
totoc and State of llississippi, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to fences, and more especially to the posts thereof 5 and the object of the same is to provide an improved post that will hold one or more fence wires, or a web Wire fence securely and rigidly.
vl/'ith this end in view, my post is made of cast-iron or cast-steel parts as are more fully set forth in the following specification and specifically 'pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
Referring to the drawings, which form a part of this specification, and which are for illustrative purposes only, and are therefore not drawn to scala-Figure 1 is the sideelevation 'of a fence, showing in connection therewith my improved fence post, having lower parts of the clenchcr-bar broken away to show the construction thereof. Fig. 2 `is a side elevation of my invention in which theclencher-bar is pressed down in position. Fig. 3 is a top view of my post, showing how the clencher is held in place. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the post, the clencher-bar removed, showing the manner in which the notches are cut in said post. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation of the clencher-bar, showing to each notch cut therein, there is a corresponding notch cut in the post. Fig. 6 isa front elevation of my invention, the clencher-bar removed. Fig. 7 is a crosssectional view of my improved post on the line 7, 7 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a vertical sectional view of the post, showing' the manner in which the wire is securely clenched into place. Fig. 9 is a cross-sectional view of the post, the clencher-bar removed.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the post 1, is securely held in the ground by the base 2, which tapers down to a point, but is of uniform thickness. Formed to the front side, and running vertically from the shelf 3, and nearly to the hole fl, is a notched rib 5,said shelf being provided with two holes 6, th-rough each of which pass one of two downwardly extending projections 7, of the clencher-bar 8, one of the said proj ections formed on each of the side members 9,
of said clencher-bar. Secured to or formed on the upper portion of said post are supports 10, having notches cut 1n their rear part for the reception of the cross-piece 11, secured in recesses cut in the upper rear corners of said side members of said clencher-bar. Cut in the rear edges of said side members of said clencher-bar are netches 12, which correspond to the notches 13, cut in the front edge of said rib of said post. Passing through the upper end of said post are said hole fr, and the hole 14, being for the reception of the bar 15, which is for the purpose of pressing said dowi'iwardly ext-ending projections into said holes in said shelf, aft-er the wires 16, have been pressed through said notches in said rib of said post, and their corresponding notches in said side members of said clencherbar. After the wire is clenched, forming a loop 17 (which takes up any slack that might exist in the wire, and which clamps it in place securely) and said crosspiece of said clencher-bar is received by said notcher cut in said supports of said post, the bolt, nail or screw 18, (Fig. 3) is passed through said hole 4, for the purpose of holding said clencher-bar in position. lt is not absolutely necessary to have the notches in said rib of said post to correspond to notches in said clencher-bar, as said notches in said rib may correspond to the central points of the scalloped portion 19, of said side meinbers. This feature is shown by the notches 20, of said rib, which correspond to the central points of their said respective scalloped portions of said side members of said clencherbar.
Though l have specifically described my invention l claim the right to make such alterations and changes as will fall within the scope and spirit of my invention and which will be obviously necessary in its manufacture.
`What l claim is 1- 1. 1n a device of the character described, the combination of a post having a longitudinal rib secured thereto, said rib having notches cut in its front edge from end to end, a shelf having perforations therethrough, secured to the lower part of said post, a tapering base formed on the lower part of said post, supports formed on said post near its upper end, said supports having notches cut in their rear edges at their tops, a clencherbar constructed to coact with said post to hold wires in place, and means for holding said clencher-bar in position, substantially as shown and described and Jfor the purposes set forth.
, 2. In a device or" the character described, the combination of a post having a longitudinal rib secured thereto, said rib having notches cut in its front edge from end to end, a shelf having vertical perforations therethrough, secured to the lower part of said post, a tapering base formed on the lower part of said post for holding the same securely in the ground, supports 'termed on said post near its upper end, and having notches cut in their rear edges at their tops, a clencher-bar, longitudinal side members having notches cut in their rear edges secured thereto, downwardly extending projections formed onsaid side members at their lower ends, a cross-piece at the upper ends of said side members, secured in recesses cut in the rear edge at the top ends of the same, and means for holding said clencher-bar in position.
3. ln a device of the character described, the combination oi a post, a longitudinal rib secured thereto, said rib having notches cut in its iront edge from end to end, a shelf having ieriorations therethrough secured near one end oi said post, a base formed on the lower part orn said post, supports formed on said post near its outer end, and-having notches cut in their upper edges, a clencherbar, longitudinal side members having notches cut in their rear edges secured thereto,
downwardlyT extending projections formed on said members at one ci their ends, a crosspiece at the other ends of said side members secured thereto, and means for holding said clencher-bar in position.
4. ln a device oi the character described, the combinati of a post consisting of' a main body ha g a rib secured thereto and further provided with a shelf at the lower part thereof, with a ciencher-bar so constructed to adapt itseh to said post, said clencher-bar having longitudinal side meinbers having notches cut in their rear edgessecured thereto, downwardly extending proj ections formed on said side members at their lower ends, a cross piece at the upper ends of said side members being secured in recesses out in the rear edges at the top ends of the saine, and means for holding the clenclier-bar in position, substantially as shown.
ln testimony whereor" l affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
