GEORGE DUFFEY, OF DE KABB, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALE HIS RIGHT TO JOSEPH F. GLIDDEN, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FENCE-WIRE TIGHTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters -Patent No. 192,494, dated June 26, 1877; application filed March 10, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE DUFFEY, of De Kalb, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Wire-Fence Tighteners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a central vertical section of my wire-fence tightener, and Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof.
This invention relates to devices for tightening the wires of wire fences; and it consists in the combination, with a cable of wire fence of a windlass, ratchet-wheel, and a retainingpawl attached to a bracket, to be applied to a post of the fence, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, A designates one of the wooden posts of a wire-fence, and B designates one of the wires or cables thereof. C designates a detachable casing or bracket, having an attaching-plate, O1, and two side pieces, C2. Said attaching-plate is provided with point-s c c, which are forced into said post A, so as to fasten casing or bracket G thereto. The end of wire B passes through hole a, in post A, and opening c in plate O1, and is attached to a small horizontal windlass, D, joura ratchet-wheel, F, which is engaged by a detaining-pawl, G, hung to the upper part of said casing or ratchet. Said pawl and ratchet allow said windlass to be turned, so as to strain said wire B, and draw it taut and hori-l zontal, but will prevent said windlass from turning in the opposite direction, and thereby loosening said Wire B. The strain of said wire aids in keeping said casing and Windlass securedto said post. v
These wire-tighteners are easily and cheaply made, readily detachable, and portable without difficulty.
What I claim as new, andV desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved wire-tightening device, consisting of the case C, having spurs c for attachment to the post, the windlass and the ratchet-wheel and pawl, all constructed and combined substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE DUFFEY. Witnesses:
GEORGE H. GENDER, IEA V. RANDALL.
