To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jnssn J. SENN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bartlett, 1n the county of Wheeler, State of Nebraska, have invented. certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clean-and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to fence-posts, and more particularly to a fence-post having means for the ready attachment and detach ment of fence-wires to and from the same.
The primary object of the invention is to provide means whereby certain of the fencewires may be lowered and held in this position for the passage of small stock.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fence-post embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a modification. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 3, partially in section.
Referring to the drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1, 2, and 3 thereof, the numeral 6 denotes the fence-post, which may be, broadly speaking, of any desired form. As shown, however, the post comprises a bar of metal, having formed in one of its longitudinal edges a series of downwardly-directed recesses 7 for the reception of the linewires 8 of a fence and below the lowermost one of the series of recesses 7 with an upwardly-directed recess 9 for a purpose to be hereinafter-described.
In order that the line-wires 8 may be held against accidental displacement from the recesses 7, I provide a series of spring-tongues 10, which are secured at their upper ends to the said edge of the post directly above the point at which the respective recesses open through the said edge and extend into their respective recesses and lie with their lower ends against that portion of the post which lies between the said edge thereof and the recess and which is indicated in the drawings by the numeral 11. A similarly-disposed tongue 12 is provided for the recess 9. It will be readily seen that the line-wires of the fence may beslipped into and out of the recesses without being unstrung from the adjacent posts and that the lower line-wires of the fence may be disengaged from their respective recesses and engaged in the recess 9, and thereby held in lowered position.
In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 3 and 4 I provide instead of the recesses plates 13, which are secured at one of their ends to the post and have their opposite ends curved outwardly therefrom, as at 14, there being spring-tongues 15 secured to the plates by the same securing means by which the plates are attached to the post, the said tongues being arranged to bear with their free ends against the curved portions of their respective plates. It will be noted that in this form of the invention the lowermost one of the plates is inverted for the same purpose in View as that contemplated in providing the upwardly-directed recess 9. That this constructionnamely, the inversion of the wire-holding meansis essential will be read ily appreciated when it is considered that without this inversion the wires would wedge between the spring-tongue and the adjacent portion of the wall of the recess or of the plate.
What is claimed is A device of the class described comprising a post having a plurality of wire-receiving recesses formed therein, and spring-tongues secured to the face of the post in which the recesses are formed and bearing at their free ends against the opposite inner wall of the respective recesses.
