Description
H.v B. SCUTT.
BAfiBEn FENCE WIRE. N0.'180,656. Patented Aug.1,18--7S.
WITNESSES I JV VEJV' TOR M .ll'ttorneys N. PETERS, PEIOTG-LH'HOGRAPHER, WASHIIIGYON. D. C-
HIRAM B. SOUTT, OF JOLIET, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BAR-BED FENCE-WIRES.
Specification forming part of Letters-Patent No. 180,656, dated August 1; 1876; application filed June 7, 1876.
To all whom it may concern; I
' Beit known that I, HIRAM B. SGUTT,ofJoliet, in the county of Will and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbedire Fences; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
My invention consists in the construction of a wire fence, in which pronged barbs are used, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to more fully describe my invention, referrence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a perspective View of the wire-cable, showing one of the barbs connected between the twists of the same. Fig. 2 represents a perspective view of one of the barb-blanks before it is bent. Fig. 3 represents a perspective view of one of the barbs after it is bent.
Aand 13 represent two pieces of wire twisted together, which form the horizontal bars or rods of a wire-fence. Between the twists of these two wires, the fence-barbs O are placed at suitable intervals. Each barb is formed from an oblong sheet-metal plate having a V- shaped notch, act, at each end. The blank thus formed is bent to form side depressions ff, one upward and the other downward, as seen in Fig. 3, and the four prongs d d d cl are then bent at right angles to each other on each side of these depressions. When the barbs are placed in between the two wires A B, the latterlie in these depressions, which form seats for the same; and in case one'of' the prongs should become broken off, the barb will not be liable to slip away or become detached from the wires A B.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with a two-strand twisted fence-wire, A B, of a sheet-metal barb-plate,
U, having side depressions ff for receiving the wires and securing the barbpoints in the manner specified,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing l have hereunto set my hand this 6th day of June, 1576.
HIBAM SOUTT.
