Description

C.A. VOSBURGH.
BARBED FENCE WIRE.
Patented. Oct. 3,1876.
No.18Z,778.
w ITNESSES a NITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
CYRUS A. VOSBURGH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BARBED FENCE-WIRE.
' Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,778, dated October 3, 1876 application filed August 28, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, CYRUS A. VOSBURGH, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new, useful, and Improved Barb for Wire Fences, of which the following is a fullfclear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the said barb, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wire fence provided with my improved barbs Fig. 2, a top or plan View of one of the barbs attached; and Fig. 3, a side elevation of the same.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
In the drawing, A represents a Wire fence, the wires of which may be either single or twisted, as shown.
' B B are my improved barbs. I make these barbs of wire out into suitable lengths, and made pointed at the ends. I also arch these parts near the center of each piece, as shown at a. O G are slotted metallic pieces, which I employ in connection with the pointed wires.- The parts 0 0 may be struck from sheet metal by means of dies employed for that purpose.
In order to apply the barbs to the wires of the fence I insert the loops at a into the slots in pieces 0 G, and then pass the wires of the fence between the parts thus arranged together, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3. The space between the parts 0 G and the loops or arches a a, should be such that the barbs, when thus applied, will cling firmly enough to the wires of the fence to be held in a horizontal position, as represented in Fig. 1.
When the wires of the fence are twisted together only one of the twisted wires may be passed through the barbs.
The barbs, when made as described, are not only cheap and serviceable for the purpose for which they are intended, but may also be applied to the fence with facility, whether the wires of the latter are single or consist of two or more strands twisted together.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I The combination of the barbs B, formed of pointed and arched pieces of wire, and the slotted metal parts 0 with the fence-wire A, the said parts (J embracing the arched portion of the barbed parts B, and clamping the fencewire, as shown and described.
