Description
w. n. GILMAN. BARBED METALLIC FENCE.
.Patented Oct.3.1876.
WITNESSES: m um:
NJ'ETERS, PNOTO-LITHQGRAPHER, WASHINGTON. D (L of Belvidere, Boone county, Illinois,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. GILMAN, OF BELVIDERE, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BARB ED METALLIC FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,817, dated October 3, 1876 application filed August 28, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. GILMAN,
have invented a new and Improved Barbed Fence- Bar, of which the following is a specification Figure l is a side elevation of a section of a fence containing my improvement; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of one of the bars, showing the manner of attaching the barbs.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention consists ofa bar or ribbon of metal, either flat, flanged, or corrugated, pierced by a series of pairs of holes arranged on a line either at right angles with the bar or diagonally, and provided with pointed wire barbs fixed in the said holes.
A is a ribbon of metal, punched at a a, at suitable intervals, forming a series of pairs of holes, in which are fixed the pointed wire barbs b.
The holes may be punched so that the barbs may stand either at right angles with the bar or diagonally.
The pointed wires forming the barbs are placed in the holes in the metallic ribbon by first forming them into a square staple, the width of which is equivalent to the distance between the holes.
The ends of the staple thus formed are put through the holes and bent outward and down upon the ribbon or bar, to permanently secure the barb. p
The points may be left parallel with the face of the ribbon, or they may be bent at any desired angle.
A fence constructed of barbed bars of this description is an impassable barrier to animals, and is both inexpensive and durable.
If desired, the ribbon may be bent or corrugated, so that the barbfmay be put in straight, and afterward bent to hold it in place.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A barbed fence-bar, consisting of a ribbon of metal, either flat, flanged, or corrugated, pierced by a series of pairs of holes, and provided with pointed wire barbs fixed in the said holes, substantially as shown and described.
OHAs. E. FULLER, STEPHEN LAMBERT.
