Description

M. DALEY. Barbed-Wire Fence.
No. 209,46 7. Patented Oct 29,1878.
N.FETERS, PHDTO UTHOGRAPHER WASHINGTON, D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MICHAEL D ALEY, OF WATERMAN, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN BARBED-WIRE FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 209,467, dated October 29, 1878; application filed July 8, 1878.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, MICHAEL DALEY, of
Waterman, in the county of De Kalb and.
State of Illinois, have invented certain 1111- provemcnts in Barbed-Wire Fences, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The invention consists in a wire having parts in all the figures.
A is the fence-Wire. B is the barb. The wire A is bent at a, a at stated distances, the series of bends being, say, seven inches apart. The barbs B are made of short pieces of wire, pointed at each end, and bent so as to hook over the corresponding bends in the wire, the barbs, when fitted to the wire, standing at right angles thereto.
Figure 1 shows the simplest mode of carrying out my invention, which will be readily understood.
Fig. 2 shows the bent barb applied to the bent wire, the former being made longer than in Fig. 1 and returned or duplicated upon itself, the points being broughtto the same end of the barb and standing at right angles to the wire.
Fig. 3 shows two bent barbs applied to the bent wire, the points of each barb standing at them to grasp the barbs and hold them with a degree of tightness proportionate to the strain; and the impaired strength, it any, of the wire A consequent upon the bending thereof is more than compensated for by the support afforded by the barb when drawn tightly in contact therewith.
I do not claim a fence-wire provided with a spiral indentation and having a barb fitted to saidindentation; but,
Having described myimprovements,Ielaim as my invention and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States A barbed wire consisting of the wire A, having bends a a, combined with the doublepointed bent barb B, having corresponding bends, and hooked over or fitted to said wire, substantially as set forth.
Signed by me this 15th day of June, A. D. 1878.
MICHAEL DALEY.
