WIRE FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 603,168, dated April 26, 1898.
Application filed December 31, 1897. Serial No- 665,111. (No model.) i
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL W. BROMLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wilmore, in the county of Jessamine and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wire Fences, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to improvements in wire fences, and has for its general object to provide a fence construction which shall afford strength and durability and which shall be stock-proof.
Other objects relate to details of construction, which will more clearly hereinafter appear.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a section of fence constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of one of the connectors used at the meeting ends of the wires. Fig. 3 is a section view of the same, showing a strand-wire secured therein. Fig. 4 is a detail view showing the uprights or brace-wires and a strand-wire locked in position by one of my improved locking-loops, and Fig. 5 is a view of one of my improved locking-loops.
Tl1e reference-numeral 1 indicates the strand-wires, and 2 the uprights or brace-wires, of my improved fence. As shown, said uprights 2 are formed of a single piece of wire bent upon itself at 3 to form the side members .4 5, which side members are provided at corresponding intervals along their lengths with inward-extending bends 6 7, which are adapted to overlap and form eyes or openings 8, through which the strand-wires 1 pass. At the point of intersection of the brace-wires 2 and strand-wires 1 the latter are provided with an upward bend 9. Said brace-wires and strand-wire having been placed in position, the locking-loop 10, (shown in Fig. 5,) is applied in the manner shown in Fig. 4 to lock the wires together in fixed relation to each other to prevent longitudinal movement of the uprights or brace-wires and vertical movement of the strand-wires. This is accomthe other side of the strand-wire, bending said wire at right angles to itself to form a securing end 12, and finally twisting said bent end around ,the strand-wire and the other end of the locking-loop wire. It will thus be seen that each locking-loop 10 comprises a single piece of wire bent upon itself at 11 to form the two arms 13 14, one of said arms, as 14, being bent upon itself at right angles to form a securing end 12.
By the use of my improved locking-loops and by lockin g the wires together in the manner described, my fence is rendered firm and durable, all displacement of the wires is prevented, and the fence will be strong enough to withstand the attack of stock.
The numeral 15 indicates my improved connectors for securing the meeting ends of the wires. Said connectors are formed of metal and have at one end a cylindrical portion open at both ends and provided with a longitudinal passage 16 for the strand-wire, which passage is enlarged at the inner end 17 of the cylindrical portion and given a square or rectangular shape, as indicated by the numeral 16 The other end of the connectors is formed into a tongue 18, having an aperture 19 for securing the end of the opposite or meeting strand-wire. p
- The numeral 20 indicates a wedge having a serrated edge 20 for securing the wire in the squared opening of the connector.
In operation after the strand-wires have been strung in position their free ends are brought together at any convenient point in the fence and one of said wires is suitably secured in the aperture 19, as by being passed therethrough and twisted upon itself, as instrung, and the numeral 23 indicates a bracepanel, one or more of which may be employed in the construction of the fence and which may be constructed in any desired manner.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new is 1. In a wire fence, the combination with brace-Wires having inward-extending overlapping bends forming openings, of strandwires passing through said openings and a locking-loop securing said strand and brace wires in fixed relation to each other, substantially as described.
2.- In a wire fence, the combination with brace-wires having inward-extending overlapping bends forming openings, of strandwires passing through said openings and having at their junction with said brace-Wires a bend, and a locking-loop securing said strand and brace wires in fixed relation to each other, substantially as described.
3. In a wire fence, the combination with brace-wires having inward-extending overlapping bends forming openings, of strandwires passing through said openings and locking-wires passed under said bends on either side of the strand-wires and bent over said strand-wires on eitherside of said brace-wires and having each an end twisted around said brace-Wires, and having each an end twisted around said locking and strand wires, substantially as described.
5. A locking-loop for the strand and brace Wires of a fence comprising a single piece of Wire bent upon itself to form two parallel arms one of said arms having an end bent at right angles to itself and extending across the opposite arm, substantially as described.
