WIRE BARB P03 FENGES.

UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CURTIS B. BRAINARD, OF JOLIET, ILLINOIS.
WIRE BARB FOR FENCE-S.
SPECIFICATION forming part 'of Letters Patent No. 268,453, dated December 5, 1882.
Application filed July 24, 1882. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OURTIs B.'BRAINARD, of the city of J oliet, in Will county, and State of Illinois, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Wire Barbs for Fences, the construction and operation of which I will proceed to explain, reference being had to the annexed drawings and the letters and figures marked thereon, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a barb detached from the wire; Figs. 2 and 3, end views of the wire strands, showing the barb applied thereto; and Fig. 4, a perspective view.
. This invention relates simply to the peculiarly-shaped barb formed of wire and having but two points, and intended to be placed in between the wirestrands by hand as the wire is being twisted. Much diflicultyhas been experienced in using wire for a two-pointed barb when it is intertwined or inclosed between the strands of the wire fence, for the reason that it would not stay in-place and would drop out. In this barb the body a of the barb is long, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the barb, when inclosed by the wire strands c,'appears as is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The prods a point in opposite directions, and are provided at their heel next the body a with the crimp or bend a forming a seat for the strands c to lie in. This seat or crimp a? thoroughly prevents the displacement of the barb from its position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and is one of the principal features that is new. If the barb were plain at this point, pressure against one of its prods awould force it out from between the wires 0, which the kink or crimp a? thoroughly prevents, making it possible to use wire for this purpose for a two-pointed barb. The distance apart of the prods a permits the barb to be placed inbetween the strands c, as they are being twisted by suitable machinery, by
hand, thus saving the use of expensive machinery to coil the wire barb around the strands to form a two-pointed-wire barb, as is usually done.
The body a may be formed with a bow init, as is shown by the end view in Fig.3, to extend. a little outward from the strands c to form a loop, into which warning-plates or other attachments may be suspended from the fence, without such attachments or appendages be ing made to inclose the wire strands, to cause them to corrode or break. or receive injury at such'points on account of such attachments. This barb, thusformed of apiece of wire, forms a remarkably cheap, durable, and effective two-pointed barb. A
Fig. 3 represents the barb between the wire strands before they are twisted to form a lock on the barb and Fig. 4 shows the barb after the wire strands are twisted, forming a lock which holds the barb between them. by lying in the indentations a as aforesaid. The barb is first placed upon one of the strand-wires c, as shown in Fig. 5, and is held thereon-by the other strand-wire inclosing it within a single coil of the two strandwires, so it cannot fall off.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows-to-wit:
The barb for fence-wires described, made of a single piece of wire having the crimps a a and loop a in combination with the two strandwires 0 c, said barb placed upon one of said strand-wires loosely and held thereon within a single coil of said strand-wires by its fellow strand lying in the crimps a a in the manner set forth.
