HIRAM B. SCUTT, OF JOLIET, ILLINOIS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,239, dated September 18, 1877; application led August 27, 1877.
To all whom tt may concern Be it known that I, HIRAM B. SCUTT, of Joliet, in the county of Will and State ot' Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barbed-Wire Cables for Fences, which invention is fully set forth in the following specification, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of a section of a wire cable, having barbs, embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a like View ot' one of the parts of the barb, and Fig. 3 a like view ot' the whole barb.
In the drawing, A represents a wire cable, consisting of the strands a a twisted together, as shown. B B are the barbs.
In order to make and apply the barbs, Iemploy two comparatively short wires having pointed ends. Each pointed piece is coiled about the central part of its fellow, aud also about one of the strands a, respectively, as shown, until the points extend in different directions, thus forming the central eyes c e, each consisting ot' a single coil or convolution,
through which a strand of the cable passes, and which are interlocked between the strands in the manner represented. In other words, the pointed wires are each bent once around a strand, a, and each is passed through the eye of the other without being passed around the other strand.
It is obvious that a four-pointed wire barb is thus produced and made fast to the cable without making the barbs ot' long pieces.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the twisted strands a. a with the bent and pointed barbs B B, the latter bent to form the central eyes c e, one eye linked into the other between the strands. and a strand passed through each eye, substantially as and for the purposes specitied.
HIRAM B. SCUTT.
